Backup Camera Installation Question
While I have my car pulled apart to install an amplifier and subwoofer I figured I should go ahead and install front and rear cameras. I have this camera for the rear:
The question I have is this - there are these 2 rivets or screws (see pictures below) that look like a perfect fit for the camera and I’m certain I’ve seen some installs here using a similar or same camera in one of those holes. How do you get those things out? They don’t “seem” to have a head to screw them out but they feel on the inside like there’s a clip holding them in. How go I get one of those out? Is there a trick that doesn’t involve a sawzall? 😜 I thought I’d ask before I did anything too aggressive or rash. Any help would be appreciated.
I believe that they are rivets and you need to drill them out. It is a special kind of rivet that when installing, the centre pin pulls out a set of wings that compress against the surface, much like certain types of drywall anchors.
I just mounted mine using VHB double sided tape which sticks real well when applied properly. I mounted it in the same location as the rivets, then fed the wire in by the license plate lights. Easy, and no need to drill out the rivets.
Of course it was a little late as I had already drilled a hole but it’s small and no one would ever know it was there if I removed the camera and plugged it.
That’s the thread I initially used too…great pics and full of information. I just didn’t want to have my license plate light loose and possibly rattling around, so I went with what I showed in my pics.
