I was wondering if anybody could give me insight as to the best method to build a box for my C4. I really would like to be able to put my 12" sub into on the the storage bins for the coupe.
What I want to know is if I would have to build a full box to fit inside the bin, or could I just build a top for the bin, and find a method to seal the compartment up. I really don't know a lot about subs, but I would figure the fiberglass would be rigid enough.
What I want to avoid is losing the rear section storage space. I really don't mind losing the bins directly behind the seats, plus I think it would look better then a box sitting in the rear.
The purists here will kill me for this, but here goes ...
Like you I was going to put a box in the storage bin for my 10". No matter what I did I could not come up with enough airspace. So I removed the storage doors and cut a piece of MDF to cover the entire cargo area. The I cut a hole over the storage bin and mounted my sub there. Next I mounted my amp and XM receiver on the MDF. I then built a 3" high, "one sided box" that covers the entire cargo area. I installed a partition down the middle, then installed a port on the side where the sub is. This makes sort of a band pass enclosure and actually, at least in my case, sounds pretty decent.
btw, on the other side of the partion I have room to store my duster and other cleaning stuff out of sight
I probably made this sound way more complicated than it really is. I can email you pics if you want
Yeah I would be interested in seeing the pictures. Either post them here or email them to me richardj@safier.com
My 12" says it wants 1.5 cu. ft. for a sealed box. I haven't gotten a chance to see how big (or small) the storage area really is, but they seem like they should be at least 1 cu. ft.
Here's a link to a previous topic showing a couple of pics of my install. If you want to see something specific just let me know and I'll snap some more pics for you  http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=480090
I got a Pioneer TS-W12C from Walmart, was a close out or something, plus the outer box was ripped up so I ened up picking it up for $20! Seemed like a good deal. I'm not a power-freak or major audiofile, so should be okay for me. Supports 150W RMS, 450W peak. Got a 100W RMS amp for it from a friend so should be enough.
I bought a cheap enclosure with it (have returned it now that I relieze it is just too cluncky to have in the back) and tested it out. Sounded pretty good really, more then enough for me. Louder then my Klipsch subwoofer, but maybe not quite as crisp. Then again I spent a lot more on the Klipsch stuff for home :)
I just finished mine, if you are only using one sub, you might be okay, but as I was going with 2, the brakecontroller in the left compartment restricted box size to about .15-.17.
yeah, well the '85 doesn't have that, I assume that is for ABS in the 86+ years. Still just going with one. The sub wanted 1.5, I figure the compartment has about 1.2, so not too far off.

You too? I just finished my home theater a couple of months ago. I ended up with 1680 watts. Sony components and Klipsch subs and speakers. I love it and finished it off with a 53 inch sony HDTV. Don't feel bad about the Pioneer sub. I have two 10's in my Suzuki and a 690 watt amp. It has plenty of thump for me.
