Stock Radio Reliability
My '90 C4 is currently in the shop being repaired and receiving a thorough inspection and diagnosis of potential and real problems. I'm wondering about the stock radio. I get the impression that the stock radio reliability in reference to the in-dash CD player and/or the tape player is not very good. I am wondering whether it is worth the money to have the in-dash CD and tape player refurbished. It can be farmed out locally by the shop, or I understand that Ecklers has a $125 exchange program. I believe I would like to keep the car stock, and I am not excited about installing an aftermarket stereo system. The radio works fine, and I could just do without the CD and tape player functions.
:confused::confused::confused:
The factory head's are not going to last more than about 9-10 years... mostly, because they are not used enough, I suspect.
The amps on the other hand, they don't last at all!!!
There are options for fixing the head units, that are a better value than dealing with ecklers on their trade in option.
I would visit the audio section and ask this again... I don't remember all the options, but there are 2 or 3 good outfits that fix these things for a fair price.
I had my BoseGold CD refurbished 3 years ago and it hasn't missed a beat. Both owners (myself included) never blasted the speakers so the amps and speakers still sound great. A lot of guys are audiophiles and hate the Bose. It works just fine for me. I think of the Corvette as a sports car and not a concert hall. Get it fixed. You can't go wrong having the original radio in working order.
Knock on Wood ... My original Bose Gold System from 96 is still going ... and I blast metal through it all the time ... When it needs it I plan to refurbish it rather than go tradeout or new ... I recently found a local guru that convinced me of the rebuild ... He has done alot of them apparently.
I have a Sony single disc 40+4 $125.00 installed.
The problem with the Bose is its old. The CD quits first. The sound quality is old skool. When they were new they very good, and now they're out there.
I wouldn't want a Bose in my house or my car.
Dump it.

Re: Stock Radio Reliability (NBM LS1 M6)
Thanks for the replies so far. I'll appreciate any further comments or ideas as well.

If anyone has any specific names of places in the Los Angeles area that specialize in refurbishing or installing radios or stereo equipment in C4 Corvettes, I would appreciate that information. However, my car is being serviced by "Mr. Corvette" racing himself, and I'm not talking about that guy who advertises his high profile business in the Corvette magazines.
