MTX are good amps, but are too expensive at Crutchfield. Try eBay.
Be aware they make more power than they advertise. The Thunder 404 is a good choice for what you describe. It will make 50 watts x 4 channels at the very minimum.

Mitch -- I went with a combo of MTX (for the sub) and Alpine (main) in my C4. Just the other weekend, I completed the construction/intsall of the amp rack. I took them off the rear wall and made a base floor to run the wiring under. Then mounted the amps and components to it, then made a cover. I have photos of the finished project at the bottom of my web page.
Pioneer 7200H stereo/CD player, MTX amp for sub, Alpine V-12 amp for main speakers, Polk 5 1/4 satellite door speaker, Polk DX9 (6x9) rear speakers, Polk 10 inch sub mounted in storage compartment, Street wires and fuse box, Monster cables, MTX Capacitor, Radio Shack 12V cooling fans with by-pass switch.

When the amps were on the back wall I had some 1/2" plywood as a mounting bracket. I've seen some people mount directly over the carpet without additional backing, but that is risky, especialy when using a long mounting screww. The gas tank is pretty close. :D
I've seen quite a few post in the forum with people who mounted their amps in the same fashion.
