Default Amp question

Last weekend I recovered my amp box with vinyl so it would be a closer match to the leather seats and Friday after about 2.5 hours of jamming, the stereo shut off...I took out the CD wiped it off and it played for about 3 minutes and shut down again. I then thought something isn't right and reached back, lifted the cover and touched the amp...OH my goodness this thing was on FIRE!
This weekend I cut a hole in the top of the cover so that it could get some air flow. SO my question is do you think any damage was done to the amp? How would I know if any damage was done? It seems to be playing ok now, but I want to make sure it is ok.
Thanks!

I have had that problem in the pas and i was told that the AMPS have Thermal shut downs...AKA it gets too hot it shuts down so that NO DAMAGE is done to the AMP.

Good luck....lose the Vinyl cover!

but..... heat is a bad enemy of electronics and heat is the cause of many failures. Protection circuits have improved over years ago but are still there only to prevent major damage. It is kind of like the rev limiter on our engines. It helps to prevent major damage yet if you continue to hit the limit over and over, damage will occur.

PS Burnt electronics smell bad, trust me, I know
