I have the XM roady2 installed in my 2004 z06, but have background noise like alot of folks do on this forum. However, when I hold the 12vt power cable, the noise goes away. I don't want to hold onto the power cable when I'm driving! The power is pluged into the center console. I am using fm modulation.
2 questions: why would the noise go away when I grab the power cable and how to fix it? thanks.
In case anyone does a search for this problem in the future, I'll post some follow up. I'm not an electrical engineer, so I don't know why the noise was occuring, but I fixed it. I had the antenna wire running from the back near the radio antenna, into the trunk, behind the driver seat, tucked under the center console on the drivers side, exiting by the ashtray, where I have my xm unit. When I was moving my right leg back and forth while cruising down the road, I heard the xm noise get louder than softer. So I took the antenna wire out from the console, rerouted it from the truck to around the passenger seat, keeping it away from me. Now there is zero noise and good sound quality. I don't know why (maybe my electric personality ?) but that antenna wire did not like being anywhere near me. If some of you are having a noise problem on xm, you might want to try rerouting the antenna wire to see if that helps.
The most likely problem is induction, often caused by the antenna wire running alongside a power source or conductor. While DC current is not as much of a problem as AC, induction (the process by which an electrical conductor becomes electrified when near a charged body) can still occur, expecially in a floating ground installation (ie a car). Your body also generates a magnetic field, which can also be a source of induction (by which an electromotive force is produced in a circuit by varying the magnetic field linked with the circuit). Basically, keep the antenna wire away from humans and power lines.
