Not a good idea, probably some kind of transformer in there. Why don't you just get another lighter socket to hardwire in and bury it inside the dash somewhere out of sight instead.
i wonder what it would do im going to install mine also and want to hard wire it. BTW where are you going to install it? Its alot bigger then the comander and ive only seen post of those installed.
I had a SkyFi that had been installed by the previous owner. You need six volts, not 12. What he had done was used a cheap ACCY plug-in socket (Walmart - $6) and hardwired that into the electrical system, then plugged the XM transformer/accy plug into it, and taped up the whole thing with electrician's tape.
He had build a bracket that stuck out of the dash, onto which was bolted the SkiFi cradle. The SkiFi is too big to fit into the ashtray hole.
When I replaced the stereo, I ditched XM. Even direct connected (it had previously used the FM modulator) the SkiFi injected a lot of noise into the signal. Piece of junk, IMHO, but maybe I just got a bad one.
Mounted it off the center vent. It blocks the vent considerably but it was the only good location. I will have to get a socket from pepboys tomorrow. As far as noise goes, If it really sounds like crap, then I will give it to the wifey for her car, and get a unit with xm built in.
