Last week my Bose Amps (2) started really acting up; so I decided to replace the whole system with an after market. Ran down to Circuit City this morning and had them install a Pioneer DEH 6600 and Infinity Speakers. They put 5002I, 5.25's in the front and 9603, 9X6's in the back. I talked to the installer for about 1/2 an hour before I let them do it, he assured me he had done several C4s and he would take his time and do it right. While he did, I don't know how he got those 5.25's in there, but he did and all the stock grills sit flush. More importantly it sounds 100% better then the old system
My digital camera is being charged now and I should have pictures after dinner
I remember going into Circuit City here in town and asking about this and that. I then asked if they did custom installations. The kid's eyes light up (ka-CHING!) as he tells me "Sure! We do custom installs ALL THE TIME! What kinda car you got?"
"1989 Corvette with Bose...", starts I.
"Oh... Uh, my manager says we can't take any more of those in," he says.
"Oh? Why is that?" I ask.
"Well, we're just finishing up with a lawsuit over another Corvette with Bose..."

Glad to hear it sounds great. But they didn't happen to put in one of those spacers that stick the h/u out of the dash did they?
It's not needed, even though Metra and the aftermarket literature all say to use it.
The standard flat GM 1-din centered on 1.5din adapter works, just requires a small piece of plastic behind there to be cut.
It looks like they did, but with my carbon fiber kit, the h/u is pretty flush with dash and doesn't look out of place. I might try the adapters you mentioned just to see which I like better ~ thanks
When I had my Bose stereo in my 85 and it was acting up, I decided to get rid of that proven problematic pain and replace it with an updated Alpine MP3 with speakers all around and an amp. My factory alarm was also not working, so I decided to have a Viper installed as well. My installer did a fantastic job.
He did tell me that removing the Bose system was very complicated and it should not be attempted by a novice. He said it would take hours to properly remove all parts involved. Not only does the new system sound fantastic, but he was able to hide the amp in the rear cargo area pocket luggage compartment. You can't even tell it's there.
I understand that the Bose systems in the 80's were loaded with innumerable problems, but I couldn't be happier with my replacement. And the amp. makes a huge difference. If the funds are there, invest in one. The sound is like night and day.

I'm still shopping installers.

Shame your not closer, I could easily do it for ya... I am down in Torrance, near LAX. Hell, you can still do it, but it would require spending the nite at a local Marriott. Or our couch...
nice choice with the infinity Kappa, sound great I had those in my truck, but when I got the vette the speakers didn't fit so I bought some pyle(pile of *&^%! they blew 2 weeks later so much for 350W handling I only have a 500W going to 4 speakers, note to others don't buy pyle, cheap means cheap. If you want a good custom installation I did mine in two days, with an eclipse cd/dvd head unit, 7 in monitor, satalite radio, 12 in. eclipse sub and two amps. I used fiber board and liquid nails for the box, and sounds awsome. I'm in colo. let me know if you want custom stereo work. I'll do the work for less.

Give me 'bout one more season to get all my other little problems cleaned up, and I might take you up on that!
I get to tear all my bose next week
I just finished the ford exploder using infinity 5x7 and 6 1/2 sets. The sony head i bought for it has the same built in amp as the sony head i bought for the vette. After listening to it, i came to realize that i needed more power for the vette. I picked up a sony amp on ebay yesterday, $62 for 800 watts
