Look at a lot of trailers. SOme one mentioned to me if you can find the right dealer an enclosed trailer is not that much more and is less then a full price open aluminim trailer.
The challange is what is your tow vehical and do you have a place that you car park / store an enclosed trailer.
24' enclosed:
Old pic, I have a tire rack in it now.
The other challange is you have to play contortionist to get out of the car and hook up the straps underneath.
I came real close to buying a 24' enclosed trailer this weekend. It was only $5,825 for a 2005 model. I thought long and hard but couldn't pull the trigger because, like Tom mentioned, the tow vehicle size and the place to store it.
And with gas prices where they are, I need less drag, not more.
A friend of mine bought a 24' "V" nose recently. He had had a flat nosed 24' before, and he said the "V" pulls a lot easier and isn't as susceptible to wind and tractor trailers passing. He said his truck doesn’t work nearly as hard to haul it as it did when he pulled his flat nosed one, and his gas mileage is better. Anyone with experience using the "V" noses?
Don't you winch it in? How can you get in to hook the straps in front if you don't.
Nope dont winch it in. I now park the front wheels on a 1x12x 24 board to get the splitter up high enough to get my hand underneath.
Toss the strap under the front so it comes out the side. Reach under the side ( like I said ) contortionst style, grab the hook and put it in the hole.

damn...i was waiting for that to happen so i could make a deal on your current trailer
I have a connection in Charlotte, NC that can custom build you a 16' 18' or longer if you want. I had them custom make me one w/ tire rack, fuel jug holders, boxes, winch holder, and removeable fender. The base price for a 16' with no racks etc. is about $1800 or so. Has two axles that have GVW of 7500# with electric brakes. They are the manufactuer of the trailers for the largest re-seller in Charlotte but I can get them direct from the factory. Please let me know if you need more info.
My wife and I plan of buying a trailer after the 1st of the year. We have an older 80 vette that will be used for track days, open road racing and high speed rallies.
I think we've settled on two types of enclosed trailers:
1) go with an 18' to 20' box with side door inline with drivers door. Go with an awning and a place for a gen. Thinking 8' width.
2) Go for an enclosed that also has basic living quarters up front in a small 5th wheel type configuration. We're thinking we can use the trailer for other things such as taking bicycles and motorcycles and camping in trailer. Some living quarters can be very nice and expensive however were thinking basic and less cost.
Have also heard that some trailers with living quarters qualify as a second home if certified as an RV.
We have a 2004 GMC crew cab 2500 with the diesel so towing shouldn't be too bad however enclosed with living quarters can raised the weight a lot.

Sam - let me know more info! I remember your new trailer at VIR in june and it looked great.
I am on the west coast and looking for an open trailer. Don't have the space for a closed trailer although I would like one! I have an F350 so can pretty much tow anything. My biggest problem has been trying to find a source for trailers some what local the the N. Los Angeles area. If any SFV readers see this maybe they can point me in the right direction...
I have a 18' Load Trail open trailer, has a 16' deck with 2' dove tail. Give me room to add a tire rack later on. I wish the ramps were lighter, make sure you have a spare and a lug wrench/4-way that fist the lugs. My trailer blew a tire this weekend after racing in Ok, glad I had a spare, that would have been no fun.
Here is a pic from last weekend of my set up.

Mike,
Paul B. has a "tilt trailer"...very easy to load and unload. I think
his is a 18'. He is taking Steves featherlight to Nationals next week
and I think I will take his trailer. I'm hoping to save gas on the
trip. My 24' (8000lbs) gets 10mpg. If I get 13 with a 5000 lbs load,
I will save $150 in gas. I'm sure Paul wouldn't mind if we took his
trailer out for a test drive with your Dakota.

Also the angle might be too steep to drive on with low air dams.
I have been shopping for about a week for a trailer. All the dealers seem to be out 50+ miles or more from me. No one seems to carry a descent 18-20' open trailer. When they do have them they are only about $1000 less than an enclosed 20-24' trailer. Luckily I have the space for an enclosed one and the vehicle to pull it with.
Latest thing I learned is some come with leaf spring suspension or torsion dampeners. Haven't had any experience with this, but most are telling me to avoid the spring type as they tend to bounce around alot more...
With diesel fuel prices so high I recently lost interest in towing my 28' X 102" enclosed race trailer, very cool trailer, gives you a place to store the car & extra race "stuff" when not in use. Just listed it on eBay here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMESE%3AIT
or just look up eBay user ID superlund.
