Default VERY interesting article about CUP series testing new spoiler

Speeds up to 212...

http://www.nascar.com/2010/news/head...rap/index.html

1st spoiler config TOO fast in the draft (even with a smaller restrictor plate), but too slow when hung out to dry, so it may get smaller.

These cars are so highly engineered any little variation is a big deal. I once heard Chad Knaus talk about how sometimes the right set is like the edge of a knife. It's really really easy to fall off. What seems minor to us may very well be a huge deal for the Cup cars. Finding the right set up is very difficult. If you miss it there's a pretty chance that someone else in the garage will have found. it.

I think they could have, like every other racing series on earth, but the fans (and DW) thought it was ugly. Have they looked at the spoiler? talk about ugly...

I completely disagree. Wings can look good -- check out any road racing series out there. But the wings NASCAR were using made the cars look like ricers or drifters.

The NASCAR spoiler looks better than the NASCAR wing.

...that and the fact that it seemed like at least one car ended up on it's roof every week.

Back in the late 80's when Bill reached 212 mph, I loved watching NASCAR. They actually looked like the actual cars back then.

But I haven't seen any data to show the wing had any effect on that. I think, and this is just my opinion, the higher roof line, and shape of the COT is creating the lift, IF any more lift is being created when the car is spun backwards.

I use to crew on a busch car in the mid to late 90's, right at the transition from 'stock' car parts, the first couple we ran were kind of cool, the floors, roof, trunk lid, and hood had to be production sheet metal. (the inner bracing could be removed though). Pointless, but it did have something from a production car on it.

But, the bottom line is the COT w/wing has had more of a tendency to fly when turned backwards than the previous car. I expect NASCAR has done wind tunnel work to see how a car responds when running backwards, and they found that the wing didn't disrupt the air enough compared to the spoiler (old or new) to kill the lift generated by the rear deck line.

At least they're trying (FINALLY) to improve the COT. This should have been ongoing from at least last summer, with updates incorporated over the off season.

Have a good one,
Mike

Yep, AND you could throw a blanket over the first 10 cars at 212mph (and btw that was LAP speed)!
