aww, c'mon now, that wasn't "caustic" or mean, that was good old fashioned ribbin', and ribbin' is racing, or at the very least a sure sign that we like you (that man card post made me laugh something fierce, as did the "caught the gay" )
Plus, we just had to lure my old pal John McGraw into the ol "side pipes is too loud for me" debate - nice to see you John
(you see, John well knows that I am STILL in my high school phase, and DEFINITELY covering up for a shortcoming of one sort or another! )

Hi Jack,
It is nice to be back to feeling well enough to argue with you knuckleheads again! I am finally doing well enough to work in the shop and feel like I am actually getting something accomplished!
From: One thing is for sure this kind of discourse and BS would not be tolerated on the NCRS forum. Ohio

John,
Nice to to see you're up and around again. Ready for a re-stamp/restoration engine debate ? Maybe we could even get ChuckG to join in one time for old times sake.

For trips over 500 miles here is the her version. Hooker reverse flow, nice and quiet (you can actually hear the XM radio and talk at 70) and they snap on in 30 minutes.
The his version is obviously a little louder and faster.
Last weekend dad and I swapped out the side exhaust on the 67 convertible for the original style under car exhaust. That made a world of difference and I think it made the car a more enjoyable. You can hear the radio going down the road and hear your self think.

I am still trying to figure this out. I have had the side pipes on my car (original) since I bought the car. I had to replace both sides due to the fact that some "bubba" welded in Cherry Bombs under the covers. These burned out the insulation on the covers. I have never had a problem hearing my radio and I drove my car for 600 miles one way when we went to the Black Hills meet in 1981. With no air and temps up over 100 degrees in July we had to have the windows down. Still heard the radio, when we could pick up a station. Since that time I've driven to a lot of car shows and the only time I had a problem was when the radio/antenna would not pick up any stations going through low areas or areas where no stations are close by. I do not put the antenna up when I am at speed as I feel it puts extra stress on the plastic insulator on the antenna base and cracks it. JMT
I owned a '67 air coupe with side pipes and swapped them out for under car exhaust. I was afraid I would miss something important my wife might say. I'm still waiting.
I guess I must be a little different...I must have BOTH! Driving down the road with the looks & sound of kick a** sidepipes in the coolest car of the era, combined with the sound of 60's & 70's music blaring! What's better than that?
Did that to mine once and although it sounded nice, it wouldn't rev past 4000 rpm due to the backpressure involved. Went back to 2.5" side pipes from SweetThunder. Yup.....loud.
When I purchased my '64 I couldn't wait to put side exhaust on it. They were so cool looking, I just couldn't wait to swap the undercar exhaust out. It was 2 or 3 months later, I took the car in to have the installation done and the owner at J & D Corvette (a local Vette shop here in So Cal) pointed out I was removing the stock off-road exhaust mufflers for sidepipes, and pulled me aside and said I was making a BIG mistake. So, I left them on and am forever glad I did. My car's just as loud outside without sidepipes and I don't burn my leg getting out of the car.

everything you say is quite accurate (sidepipes are more restrictive than undercar, and certainly off-road undercar, exhaust) except for the calf-tattoo syndrome. The oem covers on the oem side pipes won't burn flesh even after running for a while.
Just put a 5 speed in my 66 Roadster which is also has side pipes. When you shift into 5th (overdrive ) at highway speeds the side pipes quiet right down but they still sound great around town. I think the interior stays cooler with side pipes also.
also if you know this car you would know why we wanted to change to the under car exhaust. its very original car with the original paint, ect. But in the past it was changed to side exhaust. But all the stuff for under car exhaust was there. So that’s one of the biggest reasons why we did it.
