When you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. Affiliate programs and affiliations include, but are not limited to, the eBay Partner Network.
The user's browser may need to be subscribed to Google Ads for the images to appear (?).
I think we have a winner. The latest FireFox does have a default tab for google, believe Netscape did as well. Google has some free software and tool bars that can be installed as well. Odd thing is, my work PC does not have anything google installed and I do see it in IE.
Guess the CF page comes back with a bit of HTML code that calls the google ad and if your browser okay's it, it displays. If not you don't see it.
Like I said, I don't mind it being there and in the future it may get smart enough to have good target links.
I truly now believe it is a function of being a google account holder - all youse people who see the ebay link, have you all got a google account, do you have gmail?? toolbar installed? are you presently logged in?
and Bob, that friggin cat makes me laugh my butt off every friggin time
As to references to eBay or links to eBay posted by Forum members, I think there may be some confusion on that issue as well. I had a PM conversation with Dave about it and maybe he's shared that with you.
If not, the reason for not allowing eBay links is because our experience is that it ticks off Forum members when somebody posts a For Sale thread here and uses it to link to their eBay auction on the same item.
The complaints I've heard are that if you want to sell something on the Forum fine, if you want to sell something on eBay fine, but don't put the sale up both places and put Forum members in competition with eBay bidders for your sale item.
We don't prohibit the posting of eBay links when somebody spots something funny or interesting or weird or fishy there -- just not an eBay link posted for the purpose of selling something or promoting the sale of something.
I think that should clear it up and put it to bed. The reason this thread started, and there was similar discussion in another was a eBay link was deleted and people got upset. I certainly understand if I am selling on eBay, don't put a link here to drum up sales. Very valid reason to have the link deleted and even the thread.
Thanks for the clarification!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. Please google ads to keep their ads car related, most of us on the C1/C2 area are old farts and don't want our car site trying to sell us Viagra!!!!

My guess is it has to do with whether your browser is configured to run javascript or not. The HTML source code from CF does this:
"script src="http://www.google-analytics.com/urchin.js" type="text/javascript"
If you have javascript on, you get the add. If it is off, you don't. I never logon to google, just searches. My work PC does not even have the google toolbar in IE but does have javascript configured.
Suspect the cat licked the page and removed the add.

I don't understand how they do it, but those Google ads for viagra only show up on the screens of those who need it.

I think that is why this issue came up now. There have been some eBay links removed that were not about any of us selling, but using them as reference to items someone had questions about, were interested in buying, or just thought were funny/stupid/dishonest.
There are very few of us who like the one-post newbie who advertises his prized part here, only to really have a link to his eBay auction, where he sells it out from under us, or vice versa. I think most agree, either sell here, or eBay, but don't mix them.

I have no google account, but the add shows up with my (updated) IE browser (and not the firefox browser).

Don't have a Google account, never had one, no Google toolbar and I use Yahoo to get to the forum.

I need the java that cat is drinking...
Thanks for the laugh!
To turn it on or off:
IE - Tools - Internet Options - Advanced - scroll down to scroll down to Microsoft VM. If JIT compiler is checked, that likely causes it, probably best to uncheck the other two Java items there also to turn it off. If you see a Java (Sun) above the Microsoft VM, uncheck it as well.
FireFox - Tools - Options - Content - Select / unselect Enable Javascript, probably also a good idea to set Enable Java the same.
