Mod Clarification Requested - ebay linking
Can you explain the scope of the rule against linking ebay ads in a post here? What about an eaby listing that is simply being discussed, as a misrepresentation, or as an example of something, etc. but not at all in an effort to bring it to the attention of would be purchasers? Or how about linking a completed ebay auction listing for discussion?
Just looking for your guidance, and thanks for your kindness and patience with us.

I'm not a mod, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last week.
You should PM a mod, as they seem frown on having their authooritay questioned in the open forum.
If you want them to answer quickly, post a cartoon dancing girl as your avatar and they'll get right on it.

PS. Are you going to Carlisle ? I hear they have plenty of ambulances for a guy like you to chase down that way. If so we'll have to get together.
I think Dave may be going as well.

For example, you cannot link to items for sale on a car dealer's lot. The reason is it is easy enough for a dealer to create an account, then promote his own sales by pretending to be a disinterested bystander or a curious "interested buyer" asking questions.
If you tighten that up, you could apply that to all the eBay links and the Craigslist links. While it is easy to say "I found this - I'm not connected", there aren't too many ways to double check that you are not. Unless you have been on here a long time, and everyone knows you like in Florida, then posts on links in California probably truly do not have a connection to you.
But they can't check everyone. And we know how many new Junior members get on, advertise something for sale, and fill out nothing in their profile.
I can't see anything wrong with the links like we have been doing, using them for references on questions and such, but I can see where the new company may.
Still, how is the newby going to get help? "I'm interested in this 19xx Corvette on eBay. I can't link or tell you how to find it, but can you tell me if it is a good deal, if the seller seems truthful, and is there anything wrong with the car?"

If you want them to answer quickly, post a cartoon dancing girl as your avatar and they'll get right on it.
[QUOTE]So that's why the avatar is new, huh

Then they can start a thread about how they got taken for a ride and we can laugh at them and post about how stupid they are for buying a car without having someone checki it out. This will also help create sales of correct and resto parts for the supporting vendors as well.
Win Win situation.

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts

I never did figure that one out. The only thing I can figure is that both times they deleted it was after posting in PRC. Maybe that mod didn't like and our mod does ? Never seen dave in PRC.
I did get a PM from a member that said he checks this site with his son and thought the Beef sign avatar was inappropriate.
I can certainly see issues described above, especially on newer cars / areas and policing would be difficult. I do love to go to eBay and see the funny crap and insane prices some people are asking, but not enough to go there and do a search. Also love the read the comments about it here!!!
Still, I think they should continue to leave us C1/C2 guys alone and allow eBay links. We have enough self policing in this area, really if some one signs up to CF just to try to drum up bids on their eBay sale they will get a flaming they won't soon forget.
The way I see it, if it's a blatant "I listed this on eBay" dump it. If not blatant, leave it and let us decide.
), I guess we'll not be having a dialoge here on this topic, at least not with the mods.By the way, did you see how they LOCKED the happy birthday to Dave thread, and removed JUST Bob's first pic in there (three blondes fully clothed, albeit sporting some fine cleavage) but left the other pictures? Crazy
Bob your right I don't get into the PRC forum at all. I get into enough trouble around here I don't need to go in there..

I still don't understand the whole avatar deal, you guys are right every since someone made Bob get rid of it all I've had is people IM'ng me to find out where they can get it too.
Back on track, I guess that maybe since IB has purchased the forum the rule of not linking to Ebay has grown. I agree that if it's not in the for sale section and it's not helping someone sell an item who cares? Usually the links are for what do you think, OMG or look at this crap. I think they should stay but I'm not a mod. Just my random thoughts..
BTW I'm happy to keep flying my avatar until Bob wants it back. At that time I'll find another but I couldn't resist since someone removed it from him. I originally did it just to see how long it would take to have a mod remove it. But if you want it back Bobbo you can have it. I have a feeling after a mod reads this thread though that it will be gone from my avatar too... Dave
I am very concerned about how things are shaping up here. I hate going to the offtopic or PRC area, but it seems that the new owners are pushing us towards there.
Maybe hemmings will set up a corvette only site.
so I just leave the whole CAC thing alone, and yes, the mod in the C1-C2 section is an especially major power-mad butt-wipe. No matter what crazy stuff happens over here (and I don't think the ebay linking issue is in that category, at all), I am surely not headed over to the deathly-quiet CAC.

The for-profit ownership places responsibilities on the owner (keep the content clean and free of non-paying competition or risk losing sponsors), and it places baggage on the forum (more visible adds, more non-invested visitors, more traffic to sell those adds). One responsibility is keeping the regular forum content civil, to maintain a sanitary face in the event a potential paying visitor stumbles in. It's similar to visiting your grandparents back in the 50's where children were allowed to be seen but not heard (and if you did open your mouth the action was to moderate and move the undesirable content to the "kids room," "the den", "the basement," out to "the garage," or OT & PR&C).
The CF visitor has the choice between OT and PR&C, with PR&C being something many for-profit forums shy away from. Most PR&C style forums get so many one-hit complaints (one time visitors that complain and bug out) that it's not worth the grief to provide the service to the visitors & members. The moderation demand is too much of a labor drain to offer a portal to discuss serious issues (and PR&C self-moderates to a great extent).
If you want a set of forums without owner changes, dictator moderation, and undesired restrictions (and with member input providing the direction, not corporate interests) then form a Club where members pay to support the forums. File 501c3 non-profit status for the Club with the State and Federal Government, and hold annual elections for Officers and Directors. Use advertisements and membership fees to fund the forums and other causes. A Club demands attention and member involvement (volunteers) to offer a product similar to CF's quality, but it can be worth the effort for the members. The Club's BOD can expand or restrict forum access based on membership status (and concerned members can elect officers to act on the direction of the club's moderation and offerings, rather than react to one-hit complainers).
I am surprised that there is not a healthy National non-profit Corvette Club with an active set of forums for members and visitors to congregate? NCRS has it's unique technical restoration niche and it's not exactly a membership directed club (that I also understand will restrict forum posts to members-only in 2008). Anyone have a quality National corvette club with forums to recommend?

Really though the Mod's over there are like the ****'s over there. Their way or the highway.
