My girlfriends daughter asked me if i would drive my 66 convertible in her home coming parade with the 2 people sitting on the deck lid , i declined stating that i didn't think the deck lid would hold 250lbs + . she was mad, am i wrong seems like a lot of weight on a part not designed for it .

If you have to ask, you're wrong.
Since the daughter got mad about it, you're right.
If the queen candidates don't have great big butts and don't sit on the leading edge of the lid and don't go bouncing around, it won't hurt it.
BUT, the last time (and it will be the only time ever) I had my 62 in a parade, we were behind a marching band, and I was slipping the clutch constantly to go slow enough to not run over them. We had Vettes in 2 rows going down the street. Had a C4 with automatic next to me maintaining a constant speed. If I engaged the clutch fully, I would spurt ahead towards the marching band. So slipping the clutch on and off, was my only option for 2 miles! Not good for the clutch, my leg/knee, or my temper.
Try keeping your Vette at a walking pace before entering any parade.
I wouldn't worry about the top compartment lid, but there's NOTHING that will fry a clutch and throwout bearing faster than parade duty, and they're not fun to replace.

going to have to be one heck of a long parade, uphill both ways, before you're going to cause any clutch damage...

Thanks for the opinions, too late now i already said no, perhaps next time, when i have more then 10 minutes to make up my mind, i do appreciate the input , i would have never guessed it would hold up.

gives me a reason to put a new engine and clutch in then

and I still believe that the one time I did a parade in my '65 2 years ago is a LARGE reason why i need to replace the clutch and throwout bearing this winter.
Then there is always the liability question if they get dumped or fall off the back if someone ahead of you slams on their brakes for any reason. Simply not worth it. Tell em your car is being fixed that week
One of the many great thrills I have had owning a midyear Corvette vert is having two prom contestants sitting on your rear deck lid and driving in a parade.
The last time I did it the three ladies (two in back one in the passenger seat) were not petite at all and there was no damage. Zero.
My only concern was keeping my driving smooth and not dumping anyone off the back.
We cant just keep them in the garage all the time, otherwise everyone will forget and then no one will care.
You cannot replace the memories you will have doing things like this.
My only regret was that I'm not nineteen anymore and over the years somehow I have become invisible now to girls of that age.

How timely - I just took a bunch of kids around the local high school track for homecoming yesterday. Deck lid on the C1 held up just fine. For these homecoming events - you just drive once or twice around the track around the football field - not far enough to do any damage to the clutch.
The best part was my daughter took an interest in the hobby and was beaming ear to ear when the football game was over because she and her best friend got to ride out of the football stadium in "dad's vette".....PRICELESS

Brett, yes there is adult beverage involved. 427HotRod (Jim) drinks this witches mix of Jack&DietCoke. There is reason to beleive he also pours some of this in his fuel in his 9.903 sec pump gas, normally asperated C-2.
