Default Side Mirror Replacement / install '64

I have searched the forum looking for other people that have posted about this - but have not found anyone............
anyway - I am going to replace the side mirror on my '64.
Not because I want to but because I HAVE to............
I was walking in the garage too close to it and caught the mirror just right and knocked it clean off.

What really upset me is that on the way down it scratched the paint.
Oh well............

The issue now is - is it as simple as loosening the bolts in there and taking it out and then putting the replacement back in?
or do I have to take off the entire interior door to get to the back of the mirror?

Also - should I buy a repro mirror with bowtie - or a NOS without bowtie?

The car had did not have an original bowtie mirror on there - so perhaps this had been done before.

I talked to a buddy of mine about this and he said he has done that to 2 different cars over his lifetime.

did not really make me feel any better cause I still feel like such a dumb @**

OK

if anyone out there can tell me what the complicated details are on install I would appreciate it.

Is there anything left on the door?

My 65 has a metal bracket that is held to the door skin with 2 screws. The mirror bolts to the metal bracket with recessed allen-head screw.

So, which part did you knock off?

and yes - I already went out there with the allen wrench and saw how to removie it - I am just afraid that once I take off the arm - then backing will somehow fall inside the door - then when I go to put on the new arm - with mirror attatched to it -

it will have nothing to hold on to and then fall off and I will have to buy another mirror!

If I understand correctly, you knocked the round mirror off of the chrome pedestal.

If I got that right, you can remove the allen screw, and the pedestal will lift off of the metal bracket. That metal bracket is what is held to the door with 2 screws. I believe the 2 screws are screwed into a bracket that is on the inside of the door.

cool - that is what I wanted to hear - so even though I take off the pedestal I will be able to put it right back in there when I get the new one - and that one will have the mirror attatched to it!

so

the next question is - repro with bowtie or NOS without?

Well, with your luck, I'd put a repro on there so the next time you knock it off you won't be as upset as if you'd just destroyed an expensive NOS one

Yes this sounds correct as best I can remember. Hopefully the setscrew isn't corroded to the pedestal/bracket.

It is very possible that a replacement mirror may not fit the mounting bracket currently on your car. If the mirror is the original equipment, it may be wise to find a NOS piece and save yourself the aggravation of having to replace the mounting bracket.

Good Luck

thanks for the advice - I guess if the repro does not fit I will just resell it - and go out and find an original.............

Here is the plate inside the door of my 65. Why it's not in use and the "bubba" fix was used to move the mirror forward is beyond me. That's a repair for down the road sometime if I ever get crazy enough to go for new paint.

At any rate the nut plate is riveted to the door so if you can get to the outer mount screws and they're not frozen you can probably change the mirror out.

Good luck

64's use the mirror with the bowtie; Paragon has the best one.
