Default Engine ID help please?

I picked up this motor from a guy and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what it came out of? He seemed to think it was a Corvette motor, but I'm not sure.

Here are the numbers:
F280 on back of block
3756519 on back of block
F0706D on front pad

Thanks for your help

58-62 -283
Cast June 28, 1960 & assembled July 6, 1960. "D" is not a Corvette engine trans code.

I have some very old Chevrolet Dealer Service Information Bulletins covering model years 1963 - 1984. Based on these I suspect you have a 307/200HP that was used in Camaro, Nova, and Chevelle that was produced at the Flint Motor Plant on July 6 for many of the late 1960s model years. This is based on F0706D.

However, my "Corvette by the numbers" identifies block # 3756519 as a 283 block used in '59-'61 Corvettes.

I believe F280 represents the casting date of the block. F = June; 28 = 28th day; and 0 = 1960 model year.

Hopefully someone else can confirm or challenge my findings.

Hope this helps until then.

This casting number, like most engine blocks, was not unique to Corvettes.

The D suffix at the end of the assembly code is not from a Corvette as others have said.

283 block, cast June 28, 1960, assembled July 6th; the "D" suffix says it was originally a 283/170hp 2-barrel Powerglide installed in a passenger car.

Hey guys, I also have a 3756519 283, but on the front engine tab it shows F6I0CF. I don't have the casting date handy, but wondered if from the casting number on the front of the block you could tell if this was a vette motor. Thanks!

CF is not a Corvette suffix. Check out this site.

Thanks Panama 58!! I've also been trying to determing if there is any info on the metal tag that is riveted to the front of my block reading...
Stock No
SS675
Rebuilt Engine
Power - Pak

I've read a few other threads that mentioned similar tags, but no real solid info on wether these tags were used by a specific shop or what.
