Replaced 43 year old body mounts "BODY ON" and the job was not a hard as I anticipated. Needed to remove/disconnect lots of STUFF but overall not a bad/hard job. Hardest part was getting my butt in gear and stop assuming all the bolts were going to snap off Probably a weekend job but I've been at it for a month (Holidays, cold weather, ????) I worked with loosing up mount bolts for 4-5 days soaking with with penetrating oil every day so as to avoid broken bolts/nuts/cages. Lucked out got all bolts out with NO PROBLEMS
As you can see by the pic below the project was needed. As for as NEW height I pick up about 1/8"-1/4" at the transmission (Tremec) which was the closest point I had and easiest to measure.
Thanks for a great post. I've filed it for future reference for when I actually get brave enough to try removing (snapping) the bolts to replace the mounts. I did replace both at number 4 and if that's an indication of the others, I'm in for a good time. Dave
I'm close to a body drop. Frame's done and body is almost there. I picked up a body mount kit from ecklers. #0, #2 & "inboard" are no-brainers.
The hole for the #1 body mount is big. It's the same size hole as #4. Looks like GM probably used the same brackets for both coupe & convertible. If I use the washer ecklers supplied, it will just barely cover the hole. Do I just use a big washer to get good coverage over the hole on the bottom? The steel spacer is fine on top. Seems cheesy though.
#3, if I'm reading the assembly book correctly, has 2 cushions, one on each side of the body. #4 also has two cushions, one on each side of the frame bracket. Is this right? Doesn't seem right.
I looked at your pix (thx, btw), but can't make the underside of #1 and inside the box on #3.

Look at "C2" - "BODY"
Something I know I will need to do but put off until I retire and am bored. I know it's going to be a pain and the bolts will be totally rusted since I feel the bushings and they are hard and cracked. Besides, need something else to look forward to RIGHT! Great write-up and I will save for future use. Thanks
PS....I also have a Kwik Lift. Do you think it was easier doing on the lift?
PSS....you can also save George's web site as a favorite as he has several great projects there!

I think the Kwik Lift made the job MUCH MUCH easier. Sitting on roll around stool the job was right in front of you eyes. Also removing exhaust, splash shields, etc was a breeze.
I originally didn't like my Kwik Lift until it dawned on me I could move the ramps inward so I could put jack stands on the frame and still have the base of the stands on the lift. Sometimes, ok a lot of the time, my brain just stops working! PS....I have your web site as a favorite so I can check out all you great write-ups. Thanks!
