Ok, I am upgrading my alternator and need recommendations to upgrade the voltage regulator. I have been told the solid state is a direct replacement. 65 coupe small block VR mounted on passenger side of radiator support. Anyone have parts numbers etc? Can I get one at NAPA or other local parts store? Thanks
The Duralast VR715 is a direct replacement and you can get it at AutoZone for less than $20. The cover of the your original will change over and fit if you're into that correct stuff. Dave

Ken, I'm not a expert on electric applications but I did install a new 140 amp alternator. It is my understanding that the voltage regulator is not needed as it is built into the alternator. Another part you don't need that I remembered was a pain in the day. Buy the way I can run all my electrical exciseries , radio, lights, air conditioning, and guess what I can still read the gauges and the head lights through out plenty of light.

Hi Dennis,
Some of the alternators have a built in regulator and some don't. I am staying with the old style 10dn alternator which does need a voltage regulator.
I followed your rebuild from almost the start, 383, seats, trans, and so on.
Old school alternator, why?, I was always thought you were a up date kind of a guy.

I have owned 1 wire alternators and didn't care for them. There was always a problem at idle. They just seem to drop off unlike the older 10dn 3 wire. Otherwise I would have trashed the 3 wire for a 1 wire. I also don't care for the new chrome one as I like the natural finish.
I understand your thinking, can't say I have noticed the drop off. But with re. the finish I have all natural upgrade finishes including the alternator.
