OK, Many of you have been following my thread about my transmission nightmare. So today I pulled the trans again for the 4th time! Did in 45 minutes too. That's what happened when you do things over and over, you get fast. Anyway, once the trans was out and all was clear I started the motor and all Hell broke loose. My starter exploded! If it had to happen I'm glad it happened with the tranny out. I pulled the bell housing and cleaned out all the metal. Thank goodness the block was not damaged. This has been a crazy winter.
If it wasn't for bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all. I hope this is the last time you have something happen to prevent you from enjoying your ride.
Holy Crap I never seen one explode..I put a cast iron starter head on my starter ...Old hot rodder told me more durable?..Anyway...that sucks good thing you werent under it when it happened...Something binding maybe?

Well, I have a confession. I did take her for a quick spin this morning before yanking the trans. I just had to. Man it's running so good too. Dang ole trans is breaking my B@lls I swear. Now the starter. I'm am very lucky the block did not break. The good lord was watching over me..

Good luck
Nothing was bound up it just let loose. What are the odds that would happen while the tranny was out! Good thing too cause I pulled the bell to check for metal.
Mike, WTH??!! Get that thing on all fours's and let's go. It's getting close to driving weather. Hopefully you're finding all your weak areas now before the season. Hang in there.

I know, this stuff is killing me Jeff... I'm almost there bro
Wow! What would cause that? I would carefully check the ring gear on the flywheel
I wonder if was somehow related to your tranny noise?
Nahhh, the ring gear is fine and everything else checked out fine. Just my luck this week thats all. You should have heard the sounds it made, make your skin crawl :o)

Never seen that before. Do I understand right that you started it with the trans out? If yes, then maybe that had something to do with it, nothing to keep the clutch disc in the middle, maybe through off the balance? Just an idea......

Well, as long as you don't push the clutch in the disk will stay put. To be safe though I put an alignment tool in the hole. That wasn't the issue, starter just bought the farm that's all.
Does anybody shim there starter like we're supposed to??? Wonder if it was to close to the ring gear??? Dave
Well, I will surely check that with the new starter. Thing is, that is the same starter that has been working fine for a long time, same flywheel too. I do have a new clutch...

Exploding starter
The starter nose exploding is fairly common if there is no brace at the opposite end of the starter. Was the brace there and secure on the starter stud and bolted securely to the block ??? You cannot replace the aluminum nose with a cast iron one--The aluminum nose can only be used with the 153 tooth (small) flywheel and the C.I. nose only works with the 168 tooth (large) flywheel. The bell housings are different too, depending on which flywheel you are running. Why did you have to pull the trans again---I thought the problem was fixed.
