I am finalizing the purchase of a '67 vert after a long search and just noticed a weird detail on the original tank sheet. The "date received" shows "12-7-67", and the "est date of production" show "2-17-66". This is obviously an impossible date sequence and I just wonder if St Louis used computers in generating the tank sheet or did a clerk filll these out and just screwed up the years in the dates? I don't smell a fake, as the car is a solid number one 300 hp car with too much originality. The seller has no other documentation but all the numbers look good (stamping dies, etc). It is numbers matching through and through. Need help before I spend hard earned cash on a bogus car.
It is just a base small block 300 hp car. The owner has rebuilt the numbers matching engine to a 350 hp (all the innards, valve covers, alum intake and air cleaner) and has added PW's. The car shows as a 350hp car, but the engine is still stamped as an HH engine which is what the tank sheet shows. He is upfront about the engine rebuild and the PW's, since the tank sheet shows a base car without PW's. I'll post a pic of the sheet if I can figure out how to do it. Thanks.

Here is the problem as I see it. No matter how comfortable you get with the tank sheet, it will make it much more difficult for you to sell the car one day. The car is already a 300 HP car which makes it a lot less desirable than the L79 and the "suspicious" tank sheet will only add to the problems you will have when you want to, or if you are forced to, sell the car in the future. I would treat this car as an un-documented 300 HP car. As such, IMO, it is worth NO MORE THAN $40k. REMEMBER, it will take you 5 minutes to buy the wrong car, but take you years to sell it! If you are paying more than $40k, I would walk away and look for a 1967 L79 car. One other thing you may want to consider.....you can send a picture of the tank sheet to the NCRS and they will tell you if they think it's authentic. I did it with mine. The cost is $40 and it takes a few weeks to get a response, but that is not a guarantee. Personally, I would just walk away, but you may not want to. Good luck!
Thanks Frank, and I agree with what you say. My problem is that this is one "perfect" car, condition wise...Concours ready, for which I have searched for at least 2 years and this is the first car that meets my "wants". I am particular about the color and options and don't care too much about it not being NCRS, etc. I plan to keep it a very long time and just want to enjoy it.
To find a comparable L79 fresh frame off, fully documented and matching numbers car, what would you expect in terms of price? For months, I have scoured the web (all the auction results, ebay, dealers and private ads and see them for $50 to $85K, but have not seen one in "perfectly" restored category condition like this one. Thoughts?

Thanks again.
Where are you located and what are you paying for the car?
Tweety,
That is probably an error at the factory. If someone was going to counterfeit a tank sticker I would think they would use the correct dates. If you really like this car and like you said plan on keeping it to use and you are happy with the price, buy it!
Just noticed the price. Was that a frame off restoration?
5thVet, yes is is a "just completed" full frame off NCRS spec'ed restore, down to the correct bolts, etc. He just finished it (last fall) and is in financial trouble and needs to sell. Shown once and took best in class at a prominent Concours.
Tweety,
I can tell you really like this car and if you can afford it like I said I would not worry about the tank sticker. Buy it and post some pics for us!!
Don
P.S. I am assuming that you or someone else has checked for frame and birdcasge rust etc.
5thVet,
I do like the car. In 1969, I bought the exact same car as soon as I got out of the Navy. Kept it for 11 years and sold it in 1980 (for $7,500-haha). I have other classics, but have always regretted selling the 67. I'm now 64 and decided to "relive the past" and get my car back (not the same car, but one identical to the one I had). Thanks for the support, but still don't want to make too big a $$$ mistake.
Thanks,
Tweety
Yeah for $55 you probably could pretty easily the way the market is now. It really depends on you. This sounds more like an emotional buy as opposed to an investment buy. If you were buying it to flip I would keep looking. If you are buying it to drive and remember 1969 and the car has been checked out and perfect, then it comes down to whether you want to keep looking or pick up something you know is what you want and in the shape you want.
Don't you see another problem here. Why would someone order a 67 model after the 68 run had started. Order date is 12/07/67. I would think that the error would be in the order date, not the production date.
Photo of tank sticker appears to be an original sticker. There were KNOWN mix-ups of the 1966 and 1967 dates around this time of the year on tank stickers from other original cars.....but usually the date received was December 1966 and the expected production date was January or February 1966.
It is very possible that this is a factory error. You could agree to buy the car pending a review of the sticker by NCRS Document Validation Service. Cost $40 or so (for NCRS members) and could take a few weeks to get. I believe that they will certify this sticker. EVERYTHING else I see appears fine.
Zone 06 and Dealer 229 is Frontier Chevrolet in Fresno, California.

PS: If you want more info/validation on the tank sticker, we need a full page picture. AOS (Dow-Smith) stickers are unique.
