Default Casting date on a 3 speed transmission

The casting number appears to be 3748868 and the date looks like 1201. This is in a 62 vett. Can some one give me the correct casting number for a 3 speed (if what I show is wrong) and what is 1201, thanks

That casting number is actually 3743368. The casting date is I 20 1, which is September 20, 1961.

Could a transmisssion with a 61 Sept date be correct for a 62 car made the first week of March, 1962

Technically, yes, since it's inside the six-month window; however, transmission numbers aren't judged (except in Star/Bowtie judging). That time span certainly isn't "typical", but it's possible. The actual transmission assembly date is stamped on the machined rear face of the main case on the passenger side, between the two tailhousing-to-main case attaching bolts.

I found the numbers you were talking about, I think. The number I found was stamped on the back of the middle portion of the transmission and on the machine surface and from what I could tell looking up at them from underneath, they were S9 29. Does that make any sense to anyone..

Not a high demand transmission in '62. Only 12% came with the 3-speed. The lag is entirely possible. Very weak 2/3 synchro.

Yes, that says the transmission was assembled at Saginaw on September 29, and the 9 days earlier casting date says it was in 1961.
