apologies, as I'm sure this has been discussed, and manual not in hand - I was wondering what needed to loosened in the engine bay side to remove the steering column.
from your pic all you have to do is loosen the bolt on the ragjoint holding the shaft in (mark it with a marker or tape for proper re-alignment on re-install) and loosen or remove the clamp at the firewall holding the whole column and when everything under the dash is undone you should be able to pull the column out.
Please note that from your picture you are missing parts.
At the bottom of the mast jacket where the shaft comes out there should be a spacer washer, spring, and clamp on the shaft. These are shown on page 9-1 of the '65 shop manual supplement
The rag joint bolt (circled in your photo) has to come out completely. Make sure of what you will need by taking the column apart prior to ordering parts. My column (which I just rebuilt and is still sitting on my floor) had to have a new tube, new shaft and upper and lower bearings. When I took it out I thought it only needed the upper bearing. Boy was I wrong.

thanks for the correction Steve - I couldn't remember if the bolt just needed loosening or complete removal - it's been about 2 years since I rebuilt my column and my memory ain't what it used to be...
Place some tape on the shaft just in front of those lower bearings so they stay in place as you pull the column out through the firewall.

Dennis,
I don't think his will come out without force. As you can see from his photo the clamp, spring and washer are missing. Evidently they have been for a long time. My bearing fell out because it was so damaged. His has stayed in place for some odd reason.
The rag joint can be left attached to the steering box. Just loosen the bolt and the steering shaft will slide out of it.
Jim
If his shaft is the same as mine, the bolt has to come completely out. The shaft has a flat in it that it is about 3" long with approximately 1/2" full spline at the end of the shaft. The bolt will not slip by that 1/2".

Oops. My mistake. I thought you were saying the rag joint itself had to be removed. You're correct, just the bolt needs to be removed. Sorry for the confusion. It's early here on the left coast and I need more caffeine.
