Hey all. Was all set to replace my leaf spring. Read the advice and threads about the bolts and ears breaking off. I soaked and soaked the area. No luck. Finally went to my mechanic and tried to heat up the housing. Snap. Ear cracked. So hear I go with a cover replacement. I figure best to just cut the rear bolts but the forward ones are a different story. So other than the obvious for the forward bolts any other advice? Once we get on there we know what happens.
NO...cut them and get the spring out and drop the differential and replace the cover.
I will add... make sure that the bolts for the front are NOT TOO LONG...because if they are...they can pop a hole in the cover and cause gear oil to leak of the threads.
ALSO..if you are installing a steel spring again...IT MUST be on the ground when you go to torque the bolts....IT CAN NOT be done when it is up in the air....unless you can compress the spring CORRECTLY...which is why I have them on the ground and slide under to torque the bolts.
You might have luck with those bolts by using CRC Freeze-Off Super Penetrant. Instead of heating the case, you freeze spray the bolt. I have friends that swear by this stuff for loosening "frozen" bolts. Might be worth a try....... Dave
