Default '64 electrical question.

'64 Vette, 4 speed, no a/c.

With key in off position, fuel gauge and temp gauge read as should.

With key in on position, fuel gauges goes to empty, temp goes to left (lowest reading)

What's up?

Thanks,
G

I assume you're saying that those gauges do that no matter what the actual fuel level is and the engine is hot, cold, or somewhere in between.

What does the temp gauge do when the engine is started and the car is driven? You say it reads as it should with the ignition off, and goes to the left when you turn the key to on. That implies to me that the gauge must've been giving a temp reading somewhere along the way, and not just going to the left and staying there. Same for the fuel gauge -- it sounds like it must be giving some kind of accurate reading at some point.

Something is miswired; my first reaction is the ignition circuit....get some Dr. Rebuild schematics and start tracing things out...

However, if you turn the key on with a cold engine and an empty gas tank; yes the gauges will peg left.

Sounds about right assuming your engine is cold and your tank is empty.
