Default 67 Neutral Safety Switch replacement in Auto Trans

I need to replace the NSS in my 67 and have located it at the shifter. Can it be replaced without disconnecting the shifter linkage from the trans. I'm hoping all the work can be done by just removing the three screws that hold the shifter in and then raising the shifter up high enough to reach everything. Any suggestions?

You can maneuver the shifter ***'y high enough to R&R the switch above the tunnel hole, but NOT without first removing the lever from the transmission rod linkage and removing the surround plate that secures the rubber boot. Aligning the new switch attaching 'racetracks' correctly clocked to function properly (per the AIM) is a bit tricky without three hands. The length harness routes under carpet, sill plate, etc. Kind of a time consuming, PITA job, but real difficult.

Thank you both for your help. Can the lever from the transmission rod linkage be removed from the top or will I need to get under the car? I will receive the new NSS next week so I haven't removed anything but the center console at this point.

You'll have to go under to remove the clevis. With the harness wiring, the rubber boot, the surround plate and the size & bulk of the shifter/switch ***'y all kind of fighting each other, popping the trans lever off the shifter is the easy part. This is a good time to adjust the TV linkage, throttle linkage, shifter rod-to-shifter. The switch will rotate 10* or so on the shifter within the authority of the racetrack slots. You will need a #41, 42, or 3/32 drill bit to use as a guide pin to line up holes thru the switch and the shifter with lever in Drive to achieve proper electrical contact arrangement of the switch.

Wayne

The attached PDF contains information I put together when I refurbed the PG shifter on our '65. It shows the connector at the shifter linkage under the car. Hope this is of some use.

I was just notified by Ecklers that they in fact do not have a Neutral Safety Switch for a 67 automatic in stock. Zip also doesnt have one. Now i'm talking to Piper Corvette to see if they have one. Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to where I can find one?
Thanks

The GM part number is 1993411 ... long ago obsolete. There's a couple on eBay in the $500 range. Perhaps there's a repro available? Zip shows this one, but I'd be wary about purchasing unless it's verified to be in-stock/on the shelf.

Several suppliers web sites say they have it in stock (Zip, Ecklers, Corvette Specialties, Long Island Corvette and on and on were some of them) but in reality they don't have it after I called them. Corvette America sounded like they were being straight with me on the phone and will send it out today.

I just completed installing my new neutral safety switch and everything was relatively easy to do. I did not need to get under the car or disconnect the shift linkage. I was able to remove the old switch and install the new one from the top. Thanks again for everyone's help.
