Default Distributor machine

Is this what Lars uses to tweak distributors? What is this thing?

You have to be an old timer 'junior grade' to know a Sun distributor machine.

I don't think that is a Sun. Suns are usually red and blue. It serves the same function, but I think it is a different brand. It looks like an Allen Distributor Tester, based on the color.

I've never seen one before, it is an Allen. I was touring my friends collection of cars, more than 55, when we came upon this. He said he used to use one when he was a working teenager and just had to have it. Looked practically new to me.

His collection was amazing to me, everything from a flawless '58 fuelie Vette, a Kaiser Darrin, '59 RR Silver Cloud, a Roadrunner, Barracuda, Trans Ams, Fords, Chevys, etc. It was a great, interesting day!

Killer pieces of equipment, have not used one in decades. It's very handy when needed, but unless you do a lot of distributors, it'll sit there for years gathering dust. I would love to have one, though!

Worked in tune up shop in Orlando early seventies. Every distributor got removed, cleaned and run and tuned on the Sun distributor machine. Years later I had my own, let it get away.

The machine shop I use currently has a like new Sun dist machine, and uses it for old time points distributors, and custom curves as well.

Last week, just saw this same machine being used in a garage.

Also, disappointed with Kerrmudgeon's avatar!

If you still run points, and the dist. has seen high mileage, it is almost imperative to test it on a Sun or similar machine.

The amount of wear due to high mileage on the "points cam" is surprising to most owners, with the resulting loss of spark at higher rpms. This wear is probably the most common reason for owners to switch to "pointless" systems. That and dist. bushing & shaft wear. And then the owners say how wonderful the engine now runs............

Other common faults are readily seen with the dist. out of the engine, and checked properly (both physical and Sun Machine tested).

A dizzy machine is wonderful for quickly dialing in an advance curve. Especially if you have a supply of different weights and springs.

The guy with the garage probably can really put his to use, with all those oldies.
