So I'm restoring the engine compartment of my 63 and although you guys have already helped me with the correct black, I was wondering if there was a specific primer I should use. I only ask because it's going on fiberglass and not metal.
Red oxide primer was used at the factory in the engine compartment and firewall. Cant remember if that was followed with gray primer like the body was.
My 66 did seem to have fair coverage with the red oxide primer but I don't recall seeing much body color when I stripped it. I doubt they masked it when spraying primer and color so it probably got some overspray around the hood opening that was later covered with the blackout.

If I recall correctly, the gray primer was used as a final "guide coat" to help in sanding and removing any imperfections prior to painting.

Any thoughts ?
Thank you
Are you worried about the primer being just like what GM used....or all you want is a a primer that will work????
Do you have an air compressor??? and paint guns???
What black paint are you planning on using and how do you plan on applying it???

I was referring to this post, which follows an engine compartment post. It leads one to believe that a guide coat was used in the engine compartment as it was blocked and prepped for paint. As I said, I don't think that's the real story.
The two color primers were used on exterior body panels as a depth signal when machine sanding. It wasn't necessary on any other areas.
Absolutely nothing was sanded in the engine compartment. Primer and black over unsanded fiberglass. Quite a bit of body color is also seen on the inner fender skirts under the black.

What brand of paint and color are you using on the firewall and hood.
