I believe I was one of the first here on the forum to convert to a Tremece 5 speed. You May remember that I had a Tranny Install Party Bar B Q. we had about 25 People show for the install.

I had installed a Centerforce II clutch when the car was a 327 CID. The tranny was a Keisler type TKO 500. Still running 3:36 rear gears. Mine is 3:27 First gear with the .68 OD.

Later I dropped in the GMPP ZZ 502. I was concerned about the torque level being that the TKO 500 is only rated for I believe 500 Ft Lbs of TQ.

Sine the 502 puts out 567 Lbs of TQ I had some worries about that. After speaking with Tremec Engineer at Corvettes at Carlisle...he assured me that as long as I don't Dump the clutch at 5K RPM I would be fine.

Here we are at over 15 years with no problems or broken parts and a Great Cruiser.

SST I thing has refined the conversion and made some excellent in roads to doing the swap out. The most important thing when doing this type of change is the People behind the product.

Being that they are a Supporting Vendor and on this site to help as well as Phone support makes them I thing the First choice for a Quality Product and having some one at the other end of the phone for Tech Assistance and Transmission Selection as well as correct accessories need for your application.

If I ever should need to replace my Tremec..they will be my first Call.

So anyone reading this long thread ....remember.. Service and support are the most important things to consider. I'm sure you'll get that with SST.

All mounts are new, (along with the new stock frame and everything else), so I doubt it. In any case, it only chatters in first gear, during start up.

Given that the engine is a hi-performance 327 (L84 with L79 cam), it's not developing a ton of power at idle RPM, so the gearing needs to be set up with that in mind. I'm comfortable, at this point, that gearing is probably the issue.

Thanks,
Mike

My first call was to SST; they have not been a problem, but it certainly doesn't hurt to inquire about other people's experiences with their own Tremec.

This is True and should be done... Not all are love affairs. I know of a few that have had problems.. But having some one to help you solve them is important. This forum is one of the best places to get answers.

Their are a Ton of excellent members here with the best knowledge and experience on the Corvette.

I have solved many Many Problems and been given good direction on many things over the years on the Corvette Forum.

Just to add a bit........ make sure your clutch linkage is "tight" with NO slop at any of the connections, starting under the dash.

Thes 50 year old cars do ware out !!

Not sure why you are getting chatter...however, Ive been through several of these TKO600 swaps (with different vendors) with small blocks and the recommended rear gear has always been a 3:73...that said, I have never heard that a 3:08 would automatically cause chatter...

Whatever the case with your clutch, I prefer a 4:11 with the TKO600...

The 3.7 gear in my '61 was perfect for the TKO-600 swap. Long-legged OD 5th gear and a slightly deeper first gear. I can't imagine the setup with a 4:11 unless you need to pull tree stumps out of the ground...

I have done 3:73s and 4:11s...both are great but I thought the 4:11 was more fun...especially with the TKO600
