Default KIDDE Recalling 40 Million Fire Extinguishers

Small vehicle and watercraft. Exactly the style we have in our cars.
Better check yours. I checked all of mine and found two. Entered the serial numbers and two new ones are on their way.

I have tried 4 times now, and all I get is "Processing".........Never goes to the next page.

I also have 2 in the recall.

Edit: Finally got through on the 7th submission.......I am sure they are overwhelmed!

I've had one of the recalled extinguishers in my Corvette for the past 17 years and felt confident that I was properly protected . Now you wonder how close you might have been to losing it with something as simple as a backfire . I've already contacted them by phone and they are going to replace it but can we ever be sure the replacement will be any better until we have a fire . There goes the peace of mind.

Check your cars and ALSO check your GARAGES, HOUSES, RV’s and BOATS. I had a total of four of the recalled fire extinguishers ( two were in my garage shop area). Just submitted them on line and they are sending me four new ones. This is a must do. Don’t risk it.

The car is the least of your problems. They are saying in some cases the extinguisher may - in effect - blow up. There have been quite a few injuries and one death due to this.

Checked all mine and they are First Alert brand. I got nervous because I keep one right behind the drivers seat in my '63. Not the best place to have a potential bomb.

Thanks for the tip! I had two affected units. I've requested the replacements per the link provided.

A lot of these smaller extinguishers DO NOT have a date code as described at the site. Does not matter, just enter the Model Number and Serial Number, leave the Date Code blank. It will accept that much info. I've found a total of three affected extinguishers among all of mine.
I posted this info on every automotive site where I'm a member and it's not surprising how many guys have units that qualify for replacement.
This recall covers units from 1973-2017. 44 years, that's a LOT of extinguishers!

Thanks for this post. The one in the 67 is an Amerex, but the two in the house were Kidde and they're sending me new ones.

So I have a Balkamp extinguisher in my 57 (from NAPA) with a plastic nozzle. Anybody know if it’s a hazard?

They sold the Kidde extinguishers under different brand names such as Sears etc. so I would check with NAPA to see if it is among them . You can find a huge list on line . This is probably going to be as big as the Takata air bag situation . This is what happens when the big corporations try to save pennies on each item .

Thanks Greg! Found the one I bought this year and had mounted in my basement is under this recall. This exercise was worth the trouble ? to check my garage (have 2 First Alerts there). Neither on recall by that company but found 1 to be in the red zone, will replace. Still have to check the 1 in the Vette (up in the air on lift). Will do this in the morning.

Thanks again for this headsup.

I just ordered 2 halotron by Amerex B385TS H3R Halon today and then I hear about this!
I don't believe they are made by Kidde for Amerex. If I'm wrong, please weigh in.
I saw a slew of burned corvettes online and decided to order. Can't hurt to be prepared. Also going to put a larger one in the garage.

I, too, have a Balkamp extinguisher.... looks just like a Kidde. So, I entered the info on the Kidde recall page and it said I was eligible for a replacement.
