surprise 1 - Borg Warner not Muncie (starting a new thread on this.)
Surprise 2 - while cleaning out engine compartment there is a transistor ignition amplifier in the left front fender. The car has a points distributer not sure about the coil but it looks like it might be original. I wondered why the ballast resister was hanging and there was no mounting hole. Now I know. I asked a friend that's an old Chevy parts guy. I said I thought this TI ignition was only used on high HP cars like the L72. He said "in 1966 a 390 HP was a high HP car!"
Ran into another big problem, trans problem posted under need trans expert help. Check it out.
I got a new (to me) trans today, close ratio Muncie to replace the B/W 1963 that was in it. (info on separate trans thread) Now here is something I thought was cool. Since I have to get a new slip yoke, I decided to putll the driveshaft to replace the rear u joint also. If you look closely you can still see the original stencil in yellow paint on the driveshaft from the factory. I thought that was pretty cool, although others think I have just lost it!
When I cleaned up my 66 drive shaft years ago, I didn’t have any numbers, but I could still see the two colored bands around one end and two yellow chalked X’s on the shaft. I thought it was pretty cool.
In your picture, it looks like the shaft has a slice/crack in it?

I noticed that in the picture also. I think it is a scratch but I will check it out closer, I got the new u joints for it today.
Nice score!! Gorgeous car and a great color combo. You are making quick work of this one.
I'm totally sub'd for your progress.
I agree with everyone else, fix up as needed and drive the crap out of it. MAYBE do a budget blend on the paint to make it presentable and go with it.
I'm in the middle of a $26k paint job right now and I'll definitely be more worried/stressed driving it then when I had the "10 footer" paint on it.
I have a Camaro that I did a rotisserie on and the bottom is as nice as the top. Its turning out way to nice to drive, before that I did a frame off on a convertible and it was / is the same way. I plan on enjoying this one. More fun and less stress
Last night, I decided since the trans and driveshaft were out, I would clean the tunnel and I put some heat barrier on it. I got some Frost King from the local big box store, peal and stick with foil on one side. It is only rated at R 3 but since in is not an automatic I think this should help with the heat barrier quite a bit. Hoping for some heat reduction in the interior.
So today was a real treat. NOT Let me just say there is a funny car driver that has a daughter that is sponsored by a large auto parts chain. DO NOT buy your heater core from them! After getting it all ready to put together it is to long and to skinny to fit in the box correctly. I should have known when I saw that it was aluminum but did not check the dimensions with the old part as I should have. Kinda a waste of most of the day. A rival auto chain is supposed to have the correct one by noon tomorrow so I will attack it then. At least I got a good look at the bird cage and it is pristine! So that made me feel a lot better.
That doesn’t sound like fun but at least you have a clean cage so far.
Finished up the heater core replacement today. Here's a tip I bet isn't in the service manual. Blower motor assembly will no go back in over the heater core hose outlets without taking the 427 badge off of the passenger fender. Took a while to figure out what was holding it back / out.
