Frank, great to see you're out there doing it. Be sure to make the trip from Kingman, AZ, to Oatman, AZ.....it's part of the really old 66 and one of the best locations. Oatman is where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon in 1939 to get away from the paparazzi.

Forgot to add: Check out the Grand Canyon Caverns around the Seigman, AZ/Peach Springs AZ area. Well worth the stop, and great chili, too.

On and off Rt 66 going south on 44 down past Eureka....wife never met a tourist attraction she didn't like so we went on the Mississippi Riverboat and into the Meramec Caverns....the caverns surprised me. I thought they'd be lame after having visited Luray many times, on the contrary - they were impressive...supposedly Jesse James hit out there and dodged a posse - I'm skeptical but -- that's the story!

We did 2500 miles on Rt 66 last fall in a Tesla . I loved it. I advise buying one of the "good " guid books before your trip. I bought one approximately 1/3 through my trip & was sad to see what all that I missed along the way.

Wifey has a detailed guide book with details about stuff that prob doesn't merit a stop - but thorough....

We'll slow down a bit now that we're out of Chicago/St. Louis and the big city...heading out of Rolla this morning..
Had some killer barbecue last night...in an out of the way small place...

Make sure you stop in Lebanon, MO. Take the Hwy 5 exit and go west (Right) to Historic 66.(W Elm St) (left) About 1/2 mile past dealership on Left is a newly dedicated park. They just added murals billboards which will make a great Kodak Moment.

Frank, if you wind up that you intend to stay the night in Amarillo, I would strongly suggest a side trip to the Palo Duro Canyon to see the official State Outdoor Musical melodrama TEXAS. It is a breathtaking show, although it tends to be warm in the ampitheater this time of year, at least til the sun goes down. It is wonderful after that. Cool and beautiful night sky! Bar B Que beforehand. Great entertainment!

try to eat the 'free' 72oz steak at the Big Texan in Amarillo. take a picture (they are disappointing up close and personal) of the cadillacs planted nose first on the west side of town

Thanks for all the tips about places to see/visit...

Today was the best day yet and more of the kinds of things I expected; old two lane hardtop, one lane bridges, funky old service stations, miles of solo driving through the woods and hills not seeing a soul or another car, a famous 72 year old motel, several car "boneyards" with vintage cars rusting away forlornly. Very memorable! The road down from Rolla to Joplin gives you a real feel for the "old days".....and of course there is the town of Uranus - not much to be said about that...

A little taste of the drive; it would have been fun in a C1/C2; but the wife has some nearly "off road" adventures planned in Arizona - so its 4-wheel drive for this trip.
On this leg - we went through the "Devil's Elbow" Rt 66 spur and it was a bit hairy....I was glad I was in the Expedition to be truthful...

Default Cadillac Ranch/Rt 66

Well, since this has turned into a collection of individual experiences along the route, and I haven’t seen any pics of the “Ranch” yet, here are mine from last year - and my granddaughter!

I lived in Amarillo in the late-70s and the cadillacs weren't painted up like that, just rusting hulks... not sure if the graffiti is an improvement or not, but it does show that people have no respect for other's property....

Bill, I thought that was the whole idea why it's such an attraction - it's a constantly changing piece of "artwork" as each new so-called "artist" waves his or her spray can. I'm betting in some places the paint is an inch thick by now. I agree that whoever started the ball rolling did indeed have no respect for property, but think it has long since morphed into something different. ut what do I know? I'm just an old fart who has no desire whatever to paint on them.
