Driver side mirror problem/question
I stripped the out side mirror mounting screw that goes through the base of the mirror. The screw looks OK, so I suspect the base of the mirror. I have a couple questions:
1) Is it salvageable? I don't think so but I have to ask.
2) Should the out side mirror mount screw slide through the out side mirror bracket? I didn't seam logical for tightening it up?

3) If I have to buy a whole new mount kit with the mirror, when I take the old bracket off does the mirror door inner reinforcement stay put or do I have to get inside the
door to hold it in place?

Thanks for any input, Hopefully you make it understandable before I start taking things apart.

It sounds like you may have stripped the threads in the mirror base. Ouch.
You probably need to bite the bullet and buy a new mirror assembly.
The mount bracket is attached to the door with two screws that go into the "reinforcement" (nut plate) riveted to the door. Unless someone has monkeyed inside the door the nut plate should not fall into the door pocket if it's attached properly.
The taper on the mirror mount set screw should snug up the base on the mount bracket.
If the screw is good and the bracket is well attached to the door you should be able to just drop on a new mirror.
Hope this helps.

Just to clarify... the tapered shoulder of the Allen should not pass through the base piece and help secure the mirror? With the mirror off the car I can pass the Allen screw completely through the hole in the base piece tapper and all, it just passes right trough. Even though the was tight the mirror was wobbly on the car, that how I got into this trouble,
Thanks
Chuck
