Default Headlight Switch removal

Pushed the button and pulled on the **** to remove the shaft but it seems to hang up. Any thoughts or help before I start cutting the shaft. Is there a connector to the switch I can remove instead?

Sometimes the shaft does get hung up. Keep wiggling, jiggling it. Mine did that, but finally came out. Dennis

Yes. Pull or push up on the connector pictured.

I had the same problem not too long ago and someone gave me a simple answer that I can't remember now but it was either push it all the way in before pushing the release button or pull it all the way out, then press the button. Whichever it was, it was exactly opposite of what I was doing and it came right out once I did it differently.

People don't understand how the push-to-release mechanism works on these switches; start watching at 11:45 minutes into this video to see an explanation (the guy is not the greatest narrator but you'll get the idea):

This should show you why the release is a bit flakey....you have to push up on the button straight, firmly and ALL the way in to cause the little "teeter totter" metal on the slider to move the blade in the vertical plate down to release the ****'s shaft's groove to slide the **** out....and the slider has to be positioned just right over the button.

Success!!!!!!!!! I want to thank all who offered suggestion and help. When you put it all together , knowing what the objective was it slid right out. Just to add one more idea, I remembered the old adage "if it should move and doesn't WD40 it". I did that, spraying both the shaft and the button; waited a few minutes and it came apart as "advertised". Hopefully opening a beer will be less trouble. Again thanks to all and if you reading this from the archives I

Be careful with the WD-40. It is not a lubricant! When the volatile agents evaporate, the remainder becomes sticky. Make sure you clean off the residue before you reassemble it.

Buy some DeOxIT electronic contact cleaner - its good for switches, connectors (like bulkhead connectors) and radio *****. I always have a can handy - far superior to the Radio Shack spray goo...
