Originally came out of a '64 Corvette, VIN #17722, 327/365hp, 4bbl, manual transmission. There is a "sticky" thread at the top of this page that allows you access to the Lime Book which will help you in decoding.

I come up with a 1962, 327, 340 hp, manual transmission, hi performance, corvette 4bbl. Date would indicate April 15th assembly date. What is the casting date on the block?

The leading "4" in the VIN derivative suggests 1964.

Yes, passenger side at the rear of the block. Your should see a Letter followed by some numbers. This is cast and not stamped. We will know if it's a 62, 63 or '64 by this date. The last number to the right will be the indication as what year. The RE suffix was used in both years, so this will tell you which is correct. This is what you are looking for.

I agree. It is from a '64. I didn't catch the first number and just focused on the RE. Nice find.

Agree, we already know it's a 64 by the Vin stamp on the block.

I agree, nice find! Seems like 999 times out of 1000, a 'Corvette' engine in another type of car is anything but an actual Corvette engine. Rare occurrence, indeed!

Thanks to all for the information. I have a 62 C1. I was contacted by a friend who knows I have a Corvette. It's now in his pickup truck. He plans to sell it and buy an LS motor for the truck. Now that we know what it is I'm going to put it in the For Sale section. I'm getting photos of the engine and the casting #s as well/

Thanks again

It would be great if you would post this info in the ORPHAN VIN stamped Parts thread in the Sticky section and show that VIN to possibly reunite it with the car it’s out of.

edit: I posted a link to this thread there.

Unfortunately it's not listed on the C2 Registry.

Thanks to all. It's my intention to enter the information into the Orphan VIN section. I'm waiting for my friend to send me pictures of the engine casting number and the engine with it's related parts to include that as well.

Default Numbers

The block casting number is on the driver's (left) side. The casting date is on the passenger (right) side.
