Agreed. My '61 dual quad car backfired after heat soak at re-start and started a fire in my air cleaner, which I got to in time. It was a 100 degree day and conditions were perfect for percolation and combustion OUTSIDE of the engine!

A quick restart will suck the fire out!

Well, it's looking more and more like my car backfired through the carb after all.

Here's a photo of the inside of the air cleaner element. Notice the brownish stain. A similar brown patch is also seen about 180 degrees from this one.

The element doesn't smell particularly burned. In fact I would say the odor is more of burned gas than smoke per-se!

Does all this fit the diagnosis of carb backfire?

I think I'll be getting a new air filter real soon...

Yep. Looks like you are good to go once you replace the filter.

The filter wasn't the reason for the bacfire and it looks fine to me. Why would it need to be replaced?

I was thinking of asking him to send his old filter to me but the postage would be a killer.

The filter actually looks worse than in the photo I posted. It's definitely 'singed' on two places, like a little flame thrower briefly blasted it.

I got a new one today for $13 Cdn.for peace of mind.

Thanks to all who offered helpful and knowledgeable suggestions.
