Yesterday I noticed my headlights on the '67' opened very slowly and I would have to wiggle the retract/extend switch to close them. Then they wouldn't open at all unless I really put pressure and kind of wiggled the retract switch. So I'm thinking that I should look at that switch first. I remember a link here on the forum about taking that switch apart and cleaning the contacts, but I could not find it. Any tips/precautions on disassembling that rollover switch would be appreciated. Would like to try cleaning it before purchasing a new one.
I had the same problem. I purchased a new switch manufactured off shore. It lasted a few months. I took my old switch apart and cleaned it up and now all is well. I know there is a technical paper about rebuilding the switch. I wish I could put my hands on it. Good luck. Jerry
It's really pretty easy. Once you have removed it from the dash and harness you will see two clips one on each side. Carefully remove those clips and the back that contain the contact posts will come right out. Once inside you will see two copper contacts (sorry, no photo of this) that you need to carefully clean to create a solid contact. Reassemble and once again be careful with the clips. They can break easily. Reinstall and do a functional check. If they are still not working correctly you have at least narrowed it down to the headlight motors or harness.

The typical repro switches look bad too. The word HEADLIGHT doesn't look even close to correct...and they have a "spongy" feel to them when using the switch..
RPI Designs IIRC has a repro that looks much better...

Thanks guy's for response. Pictures really help. (Buns, Panama58). Just don't want to bugger it up which I've been known to do now and then when I'm in panic mode. Purchasing one is the last resort, especially if its from off shore. My R/front motor does turn much slower than the left which ain't that fast anyway. But, I know that switch needs some work which I will proceed to do. Thanks again.
Absolutely great information.............Just followed step by step (Buns, Panama 58). Took a little longer than I expected. Struggling with the the clip removal and reinstall.. Cleaned contacts and lightly sanded points, Both buckets now are working very well...... Directional adjustment is next.
Typically the passenger side bucket has a slight delay because the voltage comes from the drivers side forward to the driver side headlight and then across the front over to the passenger side.

Makes sense. I figured I might have to get into the motor rebuild sooner or later. But the will tackle the switch first. Hopefully cleaning the switch will speed up both of the motors.

Chances are that you’ll just need to clean out the old petrified grease in the gearbox and replace it with new to see a big change in operation. Dave
A disparity in motor operation can also be due to a galled main gear....
Seems the faster motor pays the price as the driver hangs on the headlight bucket switch waiting for the slower unit to catch up...grinding away the whole time...
Just a follow-up to my switch do-over. I removed, cleaned and lubed the roll-over switch. Did an ohm check to insure a minimum amount of resistance thru the switch which I got .1 ohm (point one) which I thought was about as good as it gets. Now they seem to work 'ok' and the R/H bucket that was slower than the L/H is now faster. But it least they both work. I can see right now that I'll have to get into the motors one day. That'll be the ultimate fix. Thanks again.
Just found this post after experiencing over the few months the driver side headlamp went from sometimes opening, if I fiddled with the switch to not opening at all. I followed the instructions and photos here and I am pleased to say they both function very well, thanks guys.
Polo91,
Good morning.
Would you be so kind as briefly explain how I would wire a relay in line between my roll over switch and the motors.
Thank you in advance,
Marshal
Adam: Do a search on the this forum. A member recently wrote a great paper on how to add relays to the light roll over circuit. It contained detailed instructions as to wiring, relays needed etc. Hopefully the author will post a link so I can print it up and add to my winter project list. Jerry
