Default Contingency & Risk

The windshield needs to be removed, so you may want to budget for windshield post tab repair and windshield seals. And as John mentioned, the “while you’re at it” is a risk to be considered.

If you want to get intimate with your car and test your patience and perseverance, you could do it yourself.

"Running and driving" are irrelevant to this job...

Writing a check or DIY ?

I did my own on my '61 for about $400 (everything new) 8-9 years ago using a cheap Romeo Engineering pad, it turned out OK but if I did it today I'd go first rate with an Al Knock pad which would about double the cost. If you are farming the whole job out I'd be surprised if somebody would do it for less than $2,500 on a C1. Its worse than pulling an engine, some say.

I had the engine and trans out of my '61 from start to finish in less than 2 hours last May. Easy as pie with a leveling bar on the engine. WAAAAY easier than the heater core was, which wasn't that bad. My pad is old, but looks nice and is not cracked. It stays for now. No way would I look forward to this job, but I may end up doing it. I think it ranks right up there with diff repairs/removal on a C2. I think the only way I would replace the pad is if the windshield had to be replaced anyway....which is not needed right now, either. This is perhaps the hardest task on a C1.
