Pad is June 6th and vin for a 61, and looks good to me.except maybe the broach marks might be a little deep and irregular. I don't know how the cast date could be Dec 61. It's over my level of expertise which was already pretty low. Hope you figure it out.

I cleaned it up a little more and got as much paint out of the way as I could.
Another photo. Close up. It appears to me that there are some grinder or tool marks. I see what I think faintly resembles the bottom of the center part of an E.

E would be correct for the car.

Thoughts? Sorry to keep dragging this along

Took me this long to get where this thread should be going. I am assuming your car is a 61 Vin 10012 built on/about Jun 27, 1961. Everything would line up very nicely except for the mutilated month character which would be great if it once was in fact an "E". Understand your problem now.

edit: On the positive side, if the pad is authentic then you would not find a CT stamped block after "G" of 1961 which was the end of 61 production and the end of the 283 in Corvettes.

The correct interpretation is that the capital letter 'I' was used in cast part of the date code indicating the month of the year (also the numeral '1' was used for cast date codes).

The stamped letter 'I' was NOT used as a month indicator in any place except the engine assembly date code. In the engine assembly date code the letter 'I' was used to represent the number ONE.

Is is now as clear as mud?

Looks as if someone used a carbide burr bit and tried to make an “iny” “E” from an original cast “outie” “L”.

Send me your cell number via PM and I will send you photo of my "E128" cast date for a "730" 58 "CT" block. Of the three horizontal sections in my "E", the bottom leg appears longest with the other two legs equal in length and the middle leg exactly spaced between top and bottom legs. May not help you much but at least you might know what an "E" could/should look like. Bill

Or maybe they tried to make an L out of an E. Or maybe just an accident...

That is a chipped-off E.
