Default surface rust cleaner

I have a 1966 BB with manual brakes and the master cylinder has some light surface rust on it . . I think it is plated and has a gold cast to it. Any ideas what to use to get this surface rust off? The calipers have a bit as well.

Evapo-Rust. Works awesome. Available lots of places. Use a small paint brush to keep the rust area moist for about 30 minutes and simply wash it off. I used it soak extremely rusty bolts, nuts, etc. in a bucket overnight and in the morning absolutely zero rust.

Amazon Amazon

Evapo-Rust is amazing, but I'm not sure what effect it might have on the yellow anodized finish. You might want to test a small area before committing the entire part to a bath. If the surface rust is not too bad you might try Quick-Glo polish which does a good job of removing rust from other surfaces.

I bought the Gel version of Evapor-Rust to remove the rust off the back of a 64 clock. Has a phosphoric acid smell but maybe citric acid and not phosphoric that I was smelling. I give the gel a D grade as I had to apply 4 times, it dries out and because of the odor. I think the liquid is superior in every way and since it does not have an odor will keep your wife out of your business.

What is the difference between Evapo-Rust and naval jelly? I’ve used naval jelly for years!

Ospho is corrosive and hell on garage floors; Evap-O-Rust can be saved and reused and is not caustic.

I strain my used Evapo-Rust and put it right back in the container.

The lowes or home depot liquid versions work really well. Nice part is that it does not seem to attack paint. It is nonflammable and works much, much better at warmer temps too. I have used in a heated sonic bath and it has speeded things up tenfold.

Rust911 is a clone of Evaporust, 16x cheaper and comes as a concentrate.
Can be mixed up stronger as well for quicker job. $60 for gallon of concentrate which
makes 16 gallons diluted to Evaporsut strength. So $5/gallon vs $30/gallon for Evaporust. I've bought many gallons
but part must be submerged in the liquid and won't work painted on.

The stuff work miraculously on some parts since it leave no residue. I fixed an old Ford glove box door with the hinge
a piece of rusted wire folded over sheet metal. Don't know of another product to fix that one. After treatment the
liquid ends up black from the carbon in the steel. Stuff is not phosphoric acid and doesn't sting your skin.

Sounds like great stuff, would this be the right stuff to clean up a frame and other bits underneath?

I love Evaporust liquid. Half my car has soaked in it. LOL
However, as stated above, I had bad results with the gel.
Quick Glo worked great on my shiny bits

To soak a frame you would need a container big enough to soak it and 100+ gallons of juice. And requires a clean surface with no grease or oil on metal to work.

It really works best when parts can be completely submerged for a couple hours to 24-hours. Fantastic results on light surface rust. Badly pitted items come out very clean showing all the clean badly pitted areas. It only attacks the rust and not the base iron piece. Something as large as a frame would be better sandblasted or professionally acid dipped.

I've had pretty good results using Evaporust on areas that I can't easily dip by brushing it on the surface, then covering it with a cellophane wrap to keep it from quickly doing out.
