You Described my exact car purchase. I have the new frame and it is an automatic frame so it has a removable crossmember. I am thinking of modifying this one to make the center piece removable. Changing a clutch will be so much easier. The dang exhaust in those holes just gets in the way.
That is one of the reasons that I changed to side exhausts on my 66. Putting the exhaust in the center was another factory defect in design .
GM installed the removeable crossmember in all Automatic C2 cars, same frame pretty much in the C3 and those got the removeable crossmember also, even with the 454 engines so I think you are OK for strength.

Not really, my 67 Powerglide coupe definitely did not come with a removable crossmember.
I'm not sure where the confusion lies but I have a 64 Powerglide and no removable cross member. I don't believe any 63-67 Corvettes had a removable cross member, Powerglide or otherwise.
Hi to All Who Responded to this poll and thank you. I had scheduled this poll to end on the 30th of November (which was yesterday).
In order to go full circle, I thought that you all would like to know the actual percentage figure from the vendor up in Michigan who makes the brand new frames for both C2 coupes and convertibles. I spoke with the owner himself (Neal) at their factory and he told me that the number of buyers who order a new C2 frame and request to have them install a removable cross member is about 10 percent. Significantly different than our poll numbers which came out to approximately 76 percent for (Oh Hell Yes!) and 24 percent against (No F** Way!). Why the large difference in our poll numbers? Who knows, but the difference is interesting and something to those of us who care, to think about.
Thanks again to all of my Forum brothers who participated in this poll and have a great Holiday Season.
I’ve made it all these years fine w/o one and had my transmission out at least 5 times I can quickly recall, and without any drama. So I would save the $75 towards something else. But I can understand why the guys with non-stock transmissions would want one. If I were to modify my frame I would go with the bolted, welded on flanged connections for rigidity.
I think the poll is influenced by those that actually do the work, turn the wrenches and want to simplify the tranny removal job as opposed to those that want the car to remain 100% exactly stock as GM designed them.
I think another factor would be people are more likely to modify their existing frame rather than order a new one with the option. To me, if you need a new frame from the Michigan vendor, odds are you going NCRS or at least an original car. So I expect his number to be lower.
I called Vette Products of Michigan & they built me a new frame for my 64, with the 68&up removeable crossmember, and a bracket to mount my Muncie 4 speed. The only thing I had to was weld the 64 style park brake pivot to the crossmember. It was a no brainer in my opinion.
