Lighter weight, and less current draw.

They are also a lot easier to get in and out of a C1 that has headers. Or any other car.

I used GM manufactured mini starters, even though they cost more. Never trusted the aftermarket China made stuff. The local Chev dealer gave motorheads 25% off on parts, which helped with the price.

A 1990s S-10 ministarter works for a 168 tooth flywheels, a c.1992 corvette mini starter works for the 153 tooth FW. Unless I have that backwards, (IOW, verify before you take my word on fitment) The GM ministarters don't need special shimming to get proper tooth engagement, either, like most aftermarket ones do.

I cannot say much about the mini starters (although, I know some are superior).
Except for the W30 spec 455 in the Cutlass, ALL my starters are GM Delco style starters that have been refreshed or totally rebuilt with new solenoids.
I installed an IMG Hi-Torque mini starter on the Olds 455 in the Cutlass 4-5yrs ago, and it has performed perfectly. I love it and can recommend it. Seems like it was about $125????

Remind me what you are running for ignition? Will you have a ballast resister? If so, you either need the I terminal which most minis don’t have or the diode.
Powermaster has a mini with the I terminal, plug and play. Works great on my 427.
I went through 4 OEM starters that never worked when they got hot. Tried all the bad advice about timing, battery cables, etc. Powermaster has been working perfectly.

There is rebuilding and there is rebuilding.

Most rebuilds are brushes, maybe busing, and a starter drive.
A real rebuild includes soldering ne w brush leads into the end plate, rewinding the armature and new filed coils.
There is price difference. OTOH, a real rebuild givestotally different performance
