Rollover switch
It looks like several places sell headlight rollover switches all for bout the same price. Are they all made by the same company or are some better quality than others?
I don't know of the maker. Is your current one actually broken? If not it might just need to be carefully taken apart, cleaned and put back to together. Dennis
I'll pile on with an additional vote to rehab the original switch, if it's salvageable. I've heard nothing good about the imported reproduction switches.
You can find some guidance regarding switch rehab here:
I'm going to suggest something I thought of several weeks ago. If you are aware GM used a switch (I call it a rocker switch) for all power windows on most, if not all vehicles during the late '60's through the '80's. It functioned the same as our headlight roll over/rocker switch. Why can't that be used/adapted in some manner. I have not physically looked at or disassembled one, but the function is the same. I'm sure they can be found in a salvage yard nearby to some of us. Dennis
Is there a way to tell the difference between reproduction and original by looking at them?
On some of the repros the chrome thumb lever is a bit longer and they have less precise tolerances.
Here is the GM part # 5716297
If you search the net you can find a good used or NOS one.
A SPDT toggle switch is the action of the headlight bucket rollover switch. That is a Single Pole Double Throw - SPDT. If you are not concerned with originality and also changing the wiring harness, the common 12vdc SPDT 30amp switch is about $25 for a good switch.
Also, GM convertibles use a SPDT switch for the power top motors. Once again, the connector to the switch probably won't fit another switch from other than a60s era car.
There is a Post on hear about burnishing the points on the original switch. A Google search should bring it up.
