that is puzzling for sure. three-digit suffix codes was first used for the 70 model year. XXD is not listed anywhere. there is a XX and a XD both 69 truck engines
Well we were told from the old guy we bought it from that the tranny (Muncie) and engine were from a Vette.
Digging around online, it seems the xxd could be from any number of Chevy's.. including Camaro. There's no definite info about what it means (warranty, marine, truck, ag), but others have found it as well.
Interesting thing is that when I rebuilt the Muncie and Hurst shifter last winter the guy said the shifter was off a Camaro.
It's a 327... that's for sure and '67-69 for all intents. Maybe the head casting numbers will shed some light...
The casting number looks like a 67 327 or 350. If it is a 67, it will have the draft tube opening at the back of the block, last year before the PCV valve. 69s did not have a draft tube.
According to the "Lime Book" --- XX was a suffix for 69 350 cu in truck engines, 255 HP, 4 barrel carb and manual transmission. It does not show an XXD suffix.
The "657" block was a 67 block used for 67 Z/28 302's, 67 327's and 67 Camaro SS 350's. I'm pretty sure the 657 is a small journal block.
I seem to remember reading something years ago on the Camaro Research Group website about 63-67 blocks with XXA, XXB, XXC, and XXD suffix codes being a Chevrolet "Service Assembly Engine". I think it said they were complete over the counter and warranty engines less exhaust manifolds, distributor, water pump and carb. Basically the for runner of 1969's CE replacement blocks.
According to the "Lime Book" --- XX was a suffix for 69 350 cu in truck engines, 255 HP, 4 barrel carb and manual transmission. It does not show an XXD suffix.
The referenced casting number is a 1967 (MY) only, thus wouldn't apply to a 69 build.
My 67 MY L79 has this same casting. Built November 8th, 1966...
I would believe that "XXD" references a service part that is not decoded in the Lime book. Hopefully, someone will come up with a decoder for 1967 era service parts to solve the mystery.
There is no mystery. It’s a service block that could have gone into anything. Never came in a Corvette. You can do what you wish with it.
I agree that it did not originally come in a Corvette...but there IS a mystery. The mystery is the definition of what the "XXD" stamping represents. If you have the decoder documentation that defines this, then you should share it with us, please...
I also have never seen a 67 small block with a three letter code. However, we have a common Yale forklift at our museum that has a serial number that is untrackable, even by the Yale service folks. Someone said it could be from the military?
