Default Engine fire-up question

Hello yet again everyone...I've decided to use the engine that came (this time around) with the car instead of reverting back to a 305 like it had "stock" (the first time I owned it 12 years ago).
The engine is all assembled with a Weiand stealth intake, Edelbrock carb., chrome all over, and accessories in odd locations. Easy stuff to fix with a stock intake and carb setup, and corvette accessory brackets/accessories.
My questions concern firing the engine up to see what condition it's in. It is currently installed in the frame with all the wiring attached, fuel routed, etc., as it came from the previous owner. The front clip is entirely off the car and I'm interested temporarily plumbing the radiator to the engine but am unsure of what "temp" hoses to get....the water pump is NOT correct for the corvette. Any ideas?
Also, the trans lines are blocked off, should I leave them as they are (I'm not going to drive the car, just run it a while, or should I hook them up to the radiator? IF I SHOULD hook 'em up, how do I figure which line goes to the upper and which goes to the lower radiator attachments?
Besides the coolant and trans lines, are there any other issues (other than the potential for a fire ) I should take care of before attempting to start this? The past owner said he started it for a moment but without the coolant hooked up to see if it would start.
One more thing (sorry)....the heat riser on top of the passenger side manifold is open. What should I cover this with for the time being when I start it up? The rest of the exhaust is attached.

Thanks again for the help/suggestions. :o

Oops..forgot to say the engine was "supposed" to be rebuilt recently. How many times have you heard that one?
The block is a 3970010 (69-79) and the heads are 333882's (76cc, I think). The intake and carb look way to high to clear the '80's hood and it sounds like the stock setup is preferred to the stealth/Edelbrock carb combo anyway.

Thanks.

Hmmm - I'd just get some temp hose for the radiator at a local shop. The upper is slightly smaller than the lower as I remember 1-3/4 & 1-1/2?? Just measure before you go. Make sure the radiator is filled up. Block off the heater hoses temporarily.
- Make sure you run with the air cleaner on. If there's a backfire, this will reduce the chance of a fire.
- The engine should take a standard Chevy "short" water pump.
- Don't need to hook up the transmission cooler if you aren't going to drive it. Check all fluid levels.

Good luck -

I'd agree with this, but if you're planning on running it more than a minute or two, I'd hook a hose from one to the other hard line. Don't forget the hose clamps either.

How long has it been since it was started & run?...you might want to drop some carbon deposit remover down the plug holes to free up a stuck ring or 2. do you plan a engine re build?

Supposedly it was strated about 4 months ago. I don't know the condition of the engine so I figured getting it started would give me a better idea of it's condition. I imagine a rebuild is in the cards before the car's put back together...
