Default steering problem

What causes play in the steering wheel? I have this on both the vette and the truck. Makes driving a little scary some times. I realize it could be a number of things but I would like to see if i can narrow it down to one single area. Thanks.

Can be ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm, p. valve, gearbox, or rag joint. All gearbox's have some slop. Have someone work the steering while you look and feel for slop in each component. Although I have completely rebuilt front and steering components now, the single most improvement I got was adjusting the lash in the gearbox.

Front end alignment can also be included. Toe in loads the system while about neutral to toe out makes one wheel dominate then the other depending on the road. Behaves like sloppy steering. Your truck or car should stay straight on a level road.

The good thing about this is a wheel alignment can't be done if the parts are worn-sloppy, so its one way of finding the bad part.

Check the bushings in the "A" arms, ball joints, tie rods, and tie rod ends. If they are worn, these parts can be purchased for $225 or so and replaced with a lot of Blood, Sweat and Tears - car will drive like new. I just did my front end + a new fiberglass spring from VBP.
