Default Paint Stripper

I'm getting ready to strip the paint off my car. I've heard that Captain Lee's "Spra-Strip" is good. Your thoughts and/or recommendations are very appreciated.

Chemical Strippers can permiate the glass and remain there for quite a while thus ruining your new paint job.
Just make sure you really wash the car extremely well after using the chemicals.
Others will tell you that using a razor blade works well. I used this method.
Then others will say sanding is the best method...
There are many methods that are used here on the forum..

I vote for razor blade. Far less mess, leaves the primer for a blocking, and it only takes 2-3 days to remove all the paint. And you don't have to deal with removing the existing putty either.

i stripped mine with stripper and it was a mess.... i would use a razor blade and some friends to help out...... also, the stripper tends to find it's ways into areas that you don't want it to go.......

I just finished using the razor blade method on mine a couple weeks ago. I'd recommend it. Took about 4 days total of stripping, an hour or two a day. FAR less messy than chemicals... Very easy.

I used Captain Lee's. Lay cardboard on the floor to catch the dripping. Overall, it worked well for me.

I used a razor blade on the hood and it worked very well. On the rest of the car, it is very difficult to break through the paint. Did you guys have this problem also? If so, what did you do?

Use a razor blade as much as possible. What you cant get with a razor, then use chemicals. Razor method is cheap, simple to do and easy to clean up. Chemicals all together suck! (IMO)

As for the razor blade method?
Do you use a scraper or a straight razor blade?
Do you scrape into the paint or drag the blade over the paint?
I am going to be stripping my 82 in the next week or so and this sound like the most fail safe method.

Scrape into the paint. Somebody in the C3 section made a video of themself removing the paint with the razor method. I used the seach feature on here (what a POS) and couldnt find it. You may have better luck searching for it than I did. good luck

As for the razor part, I used something that looked like this(4 inches x 2 1/4inch)

and another like this (2inch x 2 1/2inch)

You can get both at walmart for like 5 bucks total.

WOW!
Corvette69w454, thanks that was fast. This is what makes owning a Vette unique. Everybody helping each other out!

Looks like it will be time consuming but definitely the way to go for a Superior finish.

I did the '69 last year. Combo of blades and da sander. I used the blades everywhere I could, then used the da. Also, go to a body shop supply or Wally World, or even Home Depot, and get a 3M Double Scotchbrite disc. These work great for any concave surfaces (tailights). Be careful with the DA. If you do not feel comfortable around the sharp edges, just tape them, and save that part for hand sanding. I believe I used either 120 or 180 grit paper. I only used about 1/4-1/2 of a role of paper. Do not worry about gouges with the razor or da. Do not try to cause them, but don't sweat them either. You can fix most all of them with a high build primer, which will also give you something to block.

I spent 5 minutes tonight scraping with a razor blade. Just wanted to see if this really worked. I tell you, this is the way to go!!!
In 5 minutes, I got a 1 square foot area done. My wife was even impressed.
Thanks a million.............

I started this project with a dollar store blade holder. I have to get better tools or something. I can’t imagine all the nooks and crannies in the door jambs…

I have ADD that would kill one of today’s ten year olds. Scraping a vette with a razor blade sounds like building the Giza pyramids to me.

Okay, I stripped the hood with a razor blade. It came off quite easily, I'm surprised. However, the paint seems much tougher or better bonded to the rest of the car where the engine hasn't heated the panels up. All that will come off is the clear coat. What now? Would it help to put it in the sun and let the body get hot?

Thanks everyone for your inputs. Your all very appreciated.

Wow...that works great. Is playing Van Halen required for great results?
