Default Another Steeroids Question

I am starting on my Steeroids install this morning. I have every thing draining right now and am putting together the rack and its mounting bracket. The big rubber boot across the rack itself, is it just a dust cover. The reason I ask, question 1, is when mounting the bracket to the rack is there anything that is supposed to seal the holes at the point the mounting bracket ties to the rack. The rubber is molded like there should be something there. Yet I have nothing to go there.

Question 2. When mounting the the inner tie rod ends to the main bracket the instructions do not show using the included lock washers. Do they need to go there and is red lock tight good enough for this application?

I am sure I will have more questions as I go along. If needed I can take all kinds of pics of my install and post. Thanks for any and all help.

Well so far I have had to massage the bolt holes on the drivers side mounting bracket to get it to fit correctly. Now it looks like the passengers side bracket is going to have to be massaged a little also. I did buy this kit from a forum member and it was never opened. I will get it installed but was hoping for a little more cooperation from the kit.

We're talking about what are essentially hand-built cars, and also a hand-built steering kit. (The earlier the C3, the trickier the installation...who knows why?) Keep massaging!

Lockwashers are good. Locktite Red is good too!

I am about 80% done now. I am getting the universals lined up and then I need to add the lines and the fluid. Still have to tighten the tie rods to the bracket and the spindles. Getting there.

That's BS, if there was that much tolerance from car to car then it would mean GM would have to test fit and massage a lot of steering components that came stock on the car, yet every idler arm and every steering box seems to fit just right.

Don't hold back, tell us how you feel. I don't massage my car (I just don't believe it deserves it).

It's not about that, it's just really strange to see how a high $$$ product not fitting gets excused by saying GM built these car w/ crappy tolerances yet they managed to fit mass produced parts on every single car without reworking them .... draw your conclusions.

It is all installed now with a few exceptions.
1. I need to install the cotter pins in the outer ball joints.
2. I need one hose clamp for the low pressure side.
3. Adding PS fluid.
4. Setting the support bearing.
5. Getting it aligned.
I have taken quite a few pics but they are nothing new you haven't seen as far as I can tell.

Me too. I just took off a perfectly good working PS system with no leaks!!! Should be a lot tighter and more precise anyway.

Just to let anyone who's interested know, the Steerioids system is fantastic! I got the alignment almost ***** on during the install and needed very little adjustment during alignment, the steering wheel was dead on center without having to reposition it and with the ES poly suspension parts in the arms and stabilizer along with the new ball joints, the car tracks totally true over rough spots at speed. You really can drive it with two fingers and it doesn't demand 1/4 of the attention it did with the stock system. I mean at 90 mph you hardly have to move the wheel more than an inch off center to correct for anything on a straight road. For those who don't have this, you're really missing something worthwhile. The only complaint I have about anything is that the install sheet pictures are worthless.

Default let's give Steeroids a big hand.

I agree with the above 100%. The system went on without much ajusting and make the Vette a whole driving machine. Steeroids would be a little easier to install if the photos were readable, but that's about the only complaint I have. Great additon to a great vehicle.

I like the way you painted the tie rods black. One more set of question for you guys on setting up the support bearing, I have mine extended all the way out to the end of the threads. This is the position that I get the least amount of binding. Where did you wind up setting your support bearing? Got any pics you want to share? And last but not least, were you able to get all of the binding out with the car lifted off the ground?

Whew!! Sorry for so many questions, I want to get it right, the first time.

I wish I could extend mine out further but they hit my header tubes on my Dynomax's, I did notice my steering column kind angles toward the middle of the car and I am going to trying to center it a little more to see if that helps.
