I sprayed this onto my speedo cluster. How do you finish it? Does it need to be buffed? Spray with armarol or something? The finish left after spraying seems grainy like it needs something else done to it. Any ideas?
You need to make sure the vinyl you are spraying is absolutely clean. No fingerprint oils or silicones (like Armor-All). My advice would be to get some lacquer thinner and wipe down the dash pad to remove the dye you you just sprayed. Then, clean and re-prep. SEM makes a good vinyl prep cleaner that is specifically made for cleaning vinyl and slightly softening it in preparation for dying and it works very well. You should be able to find this at an automotive paint/body supply shop.
When you re-spray, first spray a very dry, fog, type coat. Wait a couple of minutes for that to flash dry and then follow up with a couple more wet coats. The purpose of the "fog" coat is to apply enough to get the dye to stick but not enough to allow it to fisheye or mottle. Then the subsequent coats of dye stick to what you've fogged on and not react so much to any residue on the surface.
I've had good luck with the spray dyes. They seem to bond well and shouldn't require buffing or follow up work.
I would suggest using a product called "Bulldog" for a primer coat. Or, use the primer recomended by the dye mfg. The dye is actually lacquer and works very well. Pre-cleaning is essential. Might use Comet or Ajax or Babo and rinse well and dry completely.
You can use the Bulldog on chrome or aluminum too. I got mine at English Automotive Paints, a PPG dist. but I think it is at auto supplies too.
