yea im a chevy guy, i bought my vette while on my honeymoon( honest) and have always driven/raced chevys. but to tell the truth, with gm making the ugliest cars on earth, except the c6 which i cant afford, and no camaro/trans am in site, IM BUYING A MUSTANG not only is this a beautiful car, ford didnt make it impossible to work on like the camaro. bolt on parts, true dual exhaust. thanks to gm for kicking its self in the teeth, and building junk, im forced to do this. i could buy a gto, but they look like rice, and are expensive. and to make this rant corvette related, my 78/388/5 spd. will stomp a mudhole in my neihbors 2003 cobra mustang at will. hes currently buying nitrous!
Don't feel bad I ordered a 06 Mustang GT while I was overseas. Its for the wife, but I get to drive it when it needs anything done to it . And since I got her the GT, I can do anything I want to the vette . As long as I ask her first, and she says its ok . SGT Kirk
I've got to agree with you, the new Mustang GT is one hot looking car. The way I see that car if it were mine would be White w/blue Shelby stripes running down it. I have never owned a Ford product in my life but I would buy that car in a minute, it's the nicest looking retro car out there.
GM priced the Camaro & Firebird OUT of the very market they were targeted for. Add the astronomical insurance costs, and the "young" market those cars were built for couldn't afford them anymore. THAT'S why they weren't selling. Ford is now reaping the rewards with the Mustang. Man...I never saw so many on the road before.
I had an '02 Formula. GREAT car. Made my first 130+MPH run in that puppy and it wanted more....while I chickened out.

the new shelby version is the ultimate vehicle. NEW vette performance, and still resonably priced for what it is. oh yea, i love my vette! ( remember its got to be vette related )
I love that new Mustang. Nice styling, good performance, and decent handling. The only downside there might be is that they are all over the place. Last month in California, we passed a procession of eight cars, four of which were new Mustangs. Rentals, I suspect.
it is a sad day when i here corvette owners talking like this...... it is not sad cause they are off there rockers or something, but it is sad because you guys are right.
Coming from an guy who used to be a DIE-HARD Mustang fanatic, this thread makes me sad. There is absolutely no, NO comparison between a Rustang and a Corvette in perfromance, handling, and especially looks. If you want a better handling/performing car than your current C3, then get a used C4/C5. You can get them for the same price or less then one of those bloated bricks on wheels that they just slap a chrome pony on. There is absolutely no prestiege in owning a Mustang, and no one really respects them in the way that they do Corvettes, nor should they...but do whatever will make you happy.

Truth be known, this is the reason we do not have Camaros anymore.
The real money is made building high volume, high margin trucks and SUV's. That is where the fat market is, so that is what they build. GM is not a charity, they are a "for profit" business. True, GM killed the cheap sports car market by overpricing them and making them look all the same along with all the other manufacturers but some of the other makes are coming back now. At the end of F-body production, all you had to choose from was black or grey interior color and the outside was pretty bland too. HO-HUM! The performance was there but that is not what sells lots of cars.
All we need now is a little competition, a lot of interest from folks with money, and GM will be there to answer the call. With that, it can be 1969 all over again.

I don't think he was looking for another project car, more of a DD. One thing you forgot that the vette has over the stang is a higher insurance premium.
I've said this for a long time now, All GM has to do to bring a killer car to market is to use the GTO/(whatever that Australian car is) chassis and bolt on a good looking set of sheetmetal that mimicks a 69 camaro, GM would sell the crap out of these and the chassis is already there. As far as the new mustangs go, they are nice looking cars but they are bigger then the last generation and I wouldn't doubt put on a few pounds as well and are still unibody, and even with 300hp they still don't even run the times that the mid 90's vettes ran with the 300 hp LT-1's. They are nice daily drivers but not vette caliber by any means. I enjoy driving my wifes 02 mustang gt 5spd, but it's not near the enjoyment of driving the vette, the extra 60-70hp and probably 150 ft/lbs of torque or more difference makes it all the more enjoyable, the only bad thing is the 10mpg vs the 25mg of the mustang and no overdrive.
gm has got to be feeling the pressure that ford is putting on them. even dodge is coming out with a new challenger in 06' or 07'. that charger was a HUGE bloated mistake IMO. gm killed the camaro/firebird by pricing it to high, building it to low, and screwing the canadian goverment/ unions that built the turd. and my god are those cars hard to work on. you dont think they designed them to be impossible for the average joe to work on them so hed have to pay a dealer labor $$ do you? noooo1? they wouldnt do that !? either im buying a stang or im selling the c-3 to pay for a c-6. if gm built gto's that looked good id buy one of them. gm should build camaros, trans-ams, chevelles, gsx buicks, 442 olds, all off the manaro, thats how they built cars back then. it would be 69' all over again.

I think some have missed the original poster's intent...he is looking for a modern sportscar, that is fairly sporty, looks good, and doesn't cost 55k+ new. Gm doesnt have anything that fits these requirements. Ford does.
I think Pat has nailed it on the farking head, turn that Neon on steroids into something pleasing to the eye, as the new mustang is, and GM would have a runaway winner.
