I've heard some jive about the Comp Cams. Has anyone tried the Comp Cams High Energy 268H. It was rated as the #1 most popular performance cam out there so I can't see what the problem is, at least with this particular model. If anyone has any experience with this model can you give me some feedback please?

Brad -
There are a bunch of people here on the Forum running the XE268H, including me. About 1/4 of all the cars I tune on the Tuning Tours have the XE268H in them. You'll hear some things about the cams wiping out lobes, but I think it has more to do with the sheer quantity of cams that Comp sells as opposed to Comp having a higher percentage of failures. The 268 is a good street cam for a mild/modest engine. It idles well with a very slight lope, has good bottom end, and it pulls very strong through the usable rpm range.
The 268H has been around about 20 years? The Xe268 about 3? Here's a picture of the XE268 out of my 350 with 3,000 miles on it.It was broken in correctly and ran good for the first 1,500 miles then you could start to feel the power change. Got to it before any valve train damage was done.

Is that what those cams look like ? Looks like crappy cast iron with a layer of harder material on the lobes and journals, glad my solid roller doesn't look like that
I have no axe to grind against comp cams. However, there seemed to be a some unhappy campers with the XE series. Haven't heard anything bad about the other cams.
Either a higher percentage of people who don't follow instructions for them buy the XE cam or they have inherent problems.
This thread is about a different series. I wouldn't see why this series would exhibt the same problems.
- The High Energy (HE) product line is older, bullet proof design
- The Xtreme energy (XE) line is newer with aggressive ramps
It seems that there are some unhappy people with the XE line, but I haven't heard anything bad about the older HE line. The XE seems to be more unforgiving for break-in procedures.
I ran the 268H in my 355 for six years and it was still running strong when I decided to pull it and replace it with my 406.I can say it was a decent cam,no problems to speak of,but I've also run several Edelbrock Performer cams and I think the Edelbrock was a better cam. The low end was noticably stronger with the Performer and the topend was no different. The comparison was not on the same exact engine, but I've been through a dozen 350's over the years. Most ran in the 8.5-9.0 cr range with stock heads,so we're talking a 4 bbl and headers for the only real mods.

Boy that cam looks awefully dry to me (no oil residue), did you clean it up or is it just the picture?
I source my engine parts from a lot of different distributors.
I have noticed since our country has gone "global", that a lot of "manufacturers" are now just re-boxing somebody elses junk, and putting their own name in it. Reputation be damned.
What we used to manufacture right here in the USA is now being manufactured by offshore factories.
The quality of workmanship has taken a nose-dive.
Since I've built so many engines, I can tell if a part is quality when I get it in my hands. There used to be a very discernible difference between a JC Whitney generic camshaft and an quality aftermarket manufacturer... not necessarily so anymore.
I'm not saying anything about Comp Cams or any other specific manufacturer... just pointing out a general trend I have noticed in the parts I am receiving. I have to measure every single part I get ... including valve spring pressures, over-all valve length, valve head diameter, piston diameter etc etc. I have been sending a lot of junk back to my suppliers, and re-sourcing the parts. S&H is starting to become a big issue.
We can't make a blanket statement anymore that "XYZ" corporation has quality products.... we joke about it, but it's true.... we need to update monthly.
I can just see the big dogs sitting at their desk as they chortle.... toking on a Cuban Cigar...
"They'll never know... just buy it from (offshore), rebox it, and charge 'em the same price. We'll make millions."
There are several very big name engine parts brands that I used to rely on for top quality, and now I will not purchase any more of their re-boxed junk. Same thing for suspension parts.
Again... I'm not saying anything about Comp Cams here.
